Can anyone tell me if its possible to test the LS1 coil packs with a mulitmeter?
I've never done it before and I'm not sure of the proper method.
Taken from LS1tech.
Ignition Coil Test
1. Disconnect the ignition coil output wire at the cap.
2. Connect a spark plug to the end of the ignition coil output wire which you just disconnected.
3. Connect a ground wire to the threaded portion of the spark plug.
4. Disconnect the ignition coil ground wire from the negative terminal on the coil (Green Wire).
5. Connect one end of a ground wire to the ignition coil negative terminal.
6. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
7. Tap the other end of the ignition coil ground wire jumper on an good grounding point (for example the battery negative terminal) and look for sparks at the spark plug that correspond to the frequency of your tapping of the ground wire.
8. If you have a good spark at the spark plug, the ignition coil is good.
9. If you don't get a good spark, check for approximately 12 VDC from the coil positive terminal (black wire) to ground with the ignition switch in the ON position. You should also get approximately 12 VDC from the coil negative terminal (Green wire) to ground
Ignition Coil Resistance Check
In addition to the test above, you may elect to perform an ignition coil resistance check as confirmation of the coil's condition.
1. Check the ignition coil primary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the positive (Black wire) and negative (Green wire) terminals on the coil. The resistance should be 0.4 to 0.6 ohms.
2. Check the ignition coil secondary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the coil output terminal and the ignition coil negative terminal. The resistance should be 5000 to 7200 ohms.
Cheers mate, Im guessing to test them with an ohmmeter I need to have them on the car with the ignition on as well??
No mate DONT turn on the ignition. You're only measuring resistance with the multimeter. (ohms) 10/20 ohms for primary and 20k setting for secondary coil.
Is it safe to assume the resistance of ALL coil packs should be between .3 and 1 ohm on the primary coil? I always check specs anyway.

Eh, Either way my Multimeter doesn't like me.
Hi, are you able to tell where you can find coil pack reference value specs?
(This is for the VZ)
I tested (with a multimeter) my old and new coil packs and I came up with some interesting values
Anyone with a repair manual that can have the look on the values (in Ohms) for the VZ coils.??
Here is how i tested, however all of them are giving me different readings.
I just replaced all 6 of them. It has 4 metal pins I tested the 2 middle ones first and then the left (1st) and 3rd one. (The other combinations gave me no reading).
OLD COILS - in MEGA ohms
pin tested XxXx (1st and 3rd) ---- Two middle pins xXXx
1 - 5.22 -------------------------- 11.94
2 - 5.00 -------------------------- 11.78
3 - 0.46 ---------------------------No reading (This one is finished)
4 - 5.02 ---------------------------11.87
5 - 5.05 ---------------------------11.92
BRAND NEW COILS
pin tested XxXx (1st and 3rd) ---- Two middle pins xXXx
1 - 10.00------------------------- 16.05
2 - 08.57 ------------------------17.33
3 - 11.96 ------------------------13.05
4 - 08.71 ------------------------16.55
5 - 08.00 ------------------------15.37
6 - 08.21 ------------------------16.14
As you can see the values are ALL over the place, however I deducted that the two middle pins need to be 13+
and the 1st-3rd pin more than 10+
Anyone that can give me some values to work with??
