    Default LS1 blocks.

    Hey guys,
Looking to have a crack at building an LS1. just looking for some information.
    I was under the impression that the LS1's used alloy blocks, if so can someone explain this;

LS1, LS2, 6.0L Cast Iron Block (eBay item 290502850527 end time 01-Dec-10 10:33:10 AEDST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats

LS1 car blocks are aluminium. I think the cast iron were used in GM truck applications. Happy to be corrected though.

That's what I was sumerising too. It's good to get it confirmed.

Does anyone know where I can get a block?
Either a blown motor or a new block depending on $$?

correct, these are truck blocks, also some tuners prefere the iron block to the alloy block because there is less distortion and movement, making them stronger.

Soop, Eagle Auto Parts down in Dandenong are a massive GM parts dealer. 92 South Gippsland Highway, Dandenong VIC 3175 (03) 8710 3000

They'd sell truckloads of these so you may get one cheapish.

I want to build a fairly strong motor, but I'm not to sure if the weight of the cast iron block is worth it, it seems fairly cheap though.
    What are alloy blocks worth?

If it were me, I'd be going big boost, so I would be going to either a 6 litre iron block or an LSX block.
Really depends what you want to do with it. If you are putting it in a light car and want to keep the weight down, an aluminium block is the way to go.

Thanks for the link, but I want to build it myself. Thus Why I'm looking for a block .

Does anyone have an idea of what a brand new block is worth without a rotating assembly?

My budget is what ever it ends up costing :P.
I'm not going to do it over night, so its not a really issue.

If I can get a full motor for $2500 surely the block is worth shit all.

the iron blocks are mostly for big power fi or if forged internals are going in. if you are looking for 350rwkw just stick with a alloy

A few months back you could get LS1/LS6 5.7L blocks for about $550 new, but I believe they are closer to $900 now. Iron 6L (LQ9) blocks are about the $1100 mark.
