    Default Vy ss exhaust

    Hey all

My car currently has a standard exhaust through to the rear where somebody has assholed the rear muffler and replaced it with pipe. It sounds alright but I'd like to gain a bit of power.

I can get the rage stuff at a really good price.

Opinions on whether pacemaker extractors are worthwhile? The factory ones don't look great for flow. Also is it worth heatwrapping them to improve flow?

Apparently the vy onwards don't like replacing the cats so then looking cat back there are 4 options (in the photos). Plus high flow cats are quite expensive.

The catalog says I'll gain 21kw. Surely I'm not loosing 40kw down my drive train though? It's manual if that helps

Sorry it's the wrong way around didn't think about it when I took the photo

    Cheers
    Taylor

You'd be surprised, A fella's VY SS II in town did 202rwkw before his tune.

I suggest Tri-y headers, magnaflow cats, and a 2.5" twin exhaust - that'll make it fairly torquey down low.

I was thinking that the pipe sizes didn't sound great.

Single 3" is a bit small
Twin 3" is a bit big?

I was thinking of starting with headers and going from there....
Or am I better to do it all at once?

I did mine all at the one time purely because I didn't want to have to get under the car more than once.

Fair enough. Looks pretty easy to do.

Is it worth heatwrapping the extractors?

It could be, I've noticed that under bonnet temperatures are fairly high these days. A heat shield might do the job though. I wrapped my last extractors on the V6 and it caused them to rust out.

As an ex Kiwi I know that the Rage brand is OK, there tube bending facility is very good but not so sure about the mufflers they use.

Like you say the design they make for the LS1 is a bit strange, either twin 3" which is too big for a std LS1 or twin 2.5" into single 3" which seems a bit small.

If you just want sound then a catback will do the job. Headers and cats are prob close to 2k NZ, quite a lot of money for the gain you get..

Unless you go for an Xforce system, the cheaper option would probably be a custom system. Depending on how loud you want it, you could not have the rear muffler similar to your setup now as the two middle and rear mufflers on together is fairly quiet with std headers and cats

I can get the headers new for 520nzd. I'm pretty keen on those.

Im mainly looking to gain a bit of power. It's already reasonably loud so don't really want it much louder.

Rage high flow cat sections are 260 a side, not excessive but the guy rekons my ecu might complain about it.

Rear section (cat back) was about 350, can't remember which of the 4 that was for though.

The info they provide says I'll get the best gain out of the extractors, and they seem to be the ones you guys are using too

I replaced my cats with 200cpi magnaflows - no error lights came up for me.

Mint. Might do them section by section then. Old cats are worth some money too. I won't be doing too much engine work so twin 2.5inch sounds like the way to go if I just get the rear fabricated too.

There's only been problems with the ecu when changing to 4-1's headers because you have to have O2 sensor extensions although I haven't heard of any cars of late changing just the cats and getting a fault code

Twin 3in is not too big for a 5.7
And why don't you see how much to ceramic coat your headers its much better than heat wrap

Twin 3" is overkill for a standard 5.7, I only have a twin 2.5" on my 6L. Ceramic coating is a better idea than heat wrapping though - I have seen oil soaked heat wrap catch on fire, I'm yet to see this with ceramic coated headers....
