Hi guys, just wanted to know does diff gears give you any extra rwkw. I dont think they do but this guy who said hes a mechanic says he builds diffs all the time and it adds 40rwkw to ur car. Dont they just make you take off quicker not give extra rwkw.
Thanks
Short answer is no.
What, putting shorter gears does is move the road speed to a different spot on the power/torque curve.
Say at 100kph your doing 1800rpm at which your point car makes 100rwkw (hyperthetical) but at 2000rpm it makes 120rwkw then changing the gearing so that at 100kph your car is now spinning 2000rpm then theoretically you have gained 20rwkw.
The engine is no different just that your driving at a different rpm similar to how changing gears works to help you move along easier but at more revs.

Has nothing to do with increased kilowatts.
Changing diff gears can increase (or decrease) tractive effort, depending on the way you go.
If you increase the amount of turns that the pinion (which is bolted to the tailshaft) takes compared to the axles (this is where the ratio figure is derived from), you will increase tractive effort or torque to the rear wheels.
Trade off is reduced top end speed. But with the moonshot 6th gear most cars have these days it actually makes it more useable.
Win win. So it 'feels' like power is increased, when in actual fact it is just making it easier for your engine to turn and get the car moving.
Comprende?
No but it does increase you "torque". I have a duel transfer case for my 4x4 with 5.7 diff gears, witch has a final "low-low-1st" drive of over 220:1 and it breaks allot of sh!t![]()
