Hey guys, i have been using Castrol Edge 10w-60 in my VY SS for about a month or 3000k so far, i like the oil. It has quientened down my valve-train noise a little. As i have only had it running in my motor for 3000k it is already black and looks like it needs changing. It has now travelled 121kms. I always change my oil every 5000k.
I have been thinking of going the 25w-50 but after researching it, i found out it is a mineral oil not synthetic like the 10w-60 is. Will i ecounter any problems changing to this oil??? I'm doing an oil change soon and want to people's opinions, if not i can stick to the 10w-60 but it just doesnt last long in my motor for some reason. Has anybody encountered similiar issues???
Please note: This is not an Oil Recommendation Thread!
What oil did you use previously? The reason I ask is that it could be residue from the old oil which has turned it black?
Just a suggestion.
I would be doing a couple of quick oil changes. Expensive with the castrol but its probably gunk still being drained. Even flush it with a cheaper nulon oil or something and go to the castrol
Get some Mainline Flushing Lube, add it to Coles-Shitty Brand Motor Oil and run it through the engine. Then Drain and Re-Fill with Castrol Edge 10w60
RE: Mineral Oil, I wouldnt use anything less than a Semi-Synthetic in non-diesel engine
I was using nulons 10w-30, crap oil very very noisy. Then changed to 10w-60.
I was going to do a flush as well, but do you guys think 25w-50 edge is tok think for the ls1? Any good or stick to 10w-60 edge?
i'm now using HPR15 semi synth in my v6 best oil so far
the engine is so quite
Im using HPR15 as well.
I liked Oleon oil. But cant get it in small batches.
Sorry to hijack this a bit. But you say tht you want to go to a 25-50 because it's mineral and not fully synthetic.
I was under the impression synthetic was the way to go with the LS engines?
Well thats what wanted to know if that is any good for the ls1, I'm also under the impression synthetic is the way to go as well
OK, you want to get rid of the decent 10w-60 oil because it's doing its job and cleaning your engine internals from the sh!t that was left over from the last inferior oil; and put in an oil which is the incorrect weight for your car.
25w-60 on a daily driver; Who the far|< told you to use thaton a LS1
Get an oil flush additive before your next change, and stay with the Castrol Edge
i just put in penrite hpr15 15w-60, made my lifter noise worse, more noise now when warm and just idling
Thanks for clearing that up QldKev. I've just read around and alot people say the 25w-50 is good for the ls1, I guess not. I'll just stick to my 10w-60.
Cheers mate I'll stick to my usual oil!
As said stick with the Castrol 10-60, iv used Castrol magnatec 10-40 which has been good but 10-60 edge is what u want, that's what I'm going back to when my motor goes back together, used edge 5-30 as well but 10-60 is good. 25-50 for an old Holden yes but as said not the LS motor.
+1 for the Castrol Edge Sport 10-60.
I change it every 5000km and have never had the thought of using another oil.
Ive used the 25-50 oil in my LS1 after i done all the cam etc. I didnt leave it in there too long, but it suffered no ill effects.
It will be fine with it.
G'day guys, just a question on oil, hopefully someone finds this and can answer the question.
I am wanting to do an oil change on my LS1 I went to autobarn and asked them to get me reasonable oil for the LS1 and he gave me the HPR5
what do you all think of this oil, is it good for an LS1 with near 190,000 k's on it. I am thinking it may be a bit thin for the cold starts. I am not sure what oil is in it at the moment (being the main reason for wanting to give it an oil change) on startup I have very noisy lifters (only for about 5 seconds)
does anyone reccommend using an engine flush before doing an oil change, and also how much oil should I put in the sump I have read where people are using up to 6 litres of oil in there LS1's
when checking my oil after driving the car the oil is near the bottom of the dipstick. but after an hour or so, the oil level is back to near normal. (after driving the car the oil level sometimes can't be seen on the dipstick at all ) is this normal for an LS1
Just a note. A simple explanation. (not gospel)
Just because the oil is black does not mean it needs changing straightaway, when the oils is black it means it is keeping contaminants suspended and not letting them build up on components as tars or varnishes. This means the oil is doing its job.
In saying that, if your oil is superthick with contaminants, or watery like, then it has broken down and should be changed. Though 5000km services are more than sufficient for a modern petrol like the ls1 IMO.
As for types of oils, I run a 5w30 full synthetic, with no lifter noise!
And as for the capacity of the ls1 sump, im pretty certain its about 6.1L
5w30 is what is recommended new. Simple answer, no I would not be putting 5w in a car with 190,000.
With a filter, im pretty sure capacity is just below 6 litres. Checking the oil just after a drive wont give you an accurate reading because its just been distributed around the engine.
thanks for that, thats what I thought, think I might try the castrol edge 10w60
the engine does seem to be a bit noisy at the moment like timing chain / lifter noise.
so maybe it is time for a bit thicker oil. the car has been serviced every 10,000k since new and always at the same place
i'd say they have always used a 5w in it, it's been about 4,000k now since last service, and oil is still clean.
The LS1's are a bit weird with oil. Everyone of them is different and it takes a bit of testing to see which oil your car likes. My car loved Oleon oil but I cant get it unless its in a 200 litre drum.
Im currently using HPR15 and that hasnt done to badly.
if the oil turns black it means its working well
