    Default oil for ls1?

hey everyone, i know fully synthetic is recomended for the gen3, but was wondering is castrol magnatec 10w40 ok in the gen3?

iv been useing castrol edge 5w30 and wanted to change to a slightly thicker oil, is the magnatec ok?
i know magnatec is good oil, used to use it in rangerovers, jaguars, etc, but wanted to know if ok on a gen3.

Research has shown that men usually sleep on the right side of the bed.

oh ok, yeh was leaning towards the castrol edge 10w60, we used to use it at work till they switched to valvoline 10w60, but its too thin the valvoline, i got a price on the edge at $75 for a 5ltr and needing 2 as there only 5ltr containers, was useing edge 5-30, but want something a bit thicker as the kays are up in the 170k now.
    will get some after christmas.

What would eveeryone recommend for an LS1 with 85,000kms on it?

Most mechanics just say Mobil 1, but I was thinking Penrite Sin15.

    Cheers,

I had recently put ULX 110 10w30 in the 6L and haven't found any problems so far, not cheap but from recent readings Mobil 1 isn't what it's cracked up to be and wanted to try something different to Castrol and the other so called flashy advertising brands.

I decided to give ULX 110 a go after reading another oil thread on JC, you can grab it from Enhanced Automotive, it's not cheap but neither is replacing a engine.

for starters mobil 1 synthetic is recommended on HSV's not holdens even though they are the same motors up to VZ anyway. go figure, holden uses various oils themselves including magnatec on holdens

if the motor is noisy on the recommended then its probably valve train noise.

i've run almost every oil, for mine pennzoil was quietest, also some others of a 40/50 grade when the oil was clean, noise returned as it got dirty again usually about 5,000K's.

rebuilt the top end now using 5/30 Edge and its quite all the time, good oil pressure at 40 psi idle. may try 10 60 next to see the effect maybe ok for summer atm, was ok when the top end was noisy, but now its not. fixed the actual problem instead of hiding it with thicker oil.

PS thicker oil will cause worn lifters to be noisier on startup, but quieter hot. thinner oil will flow faster into the lifters to pump them up sooner than thick oil less start noise, but will be noisier hot. bit of a juggle on worn parts to cover it up...

yeh i was recently told by holden when i took it there to get my water pump done under warrenty that my engine noise is piston slap and gudgeon pin noise, they said its minor atm, thats why i posted bout strocker kits as a possible rebuild option down the track if it gets worse, but when i asked the advisor at holden what would he recomend to quieten it down a bit, what oil would be good, he said mobil 1, nothing else, thats what we use and recommend and no problems with it, i haven't tried mobil 1 in it yet, but like castrol from personal experiences with castrol in the trade, and with the 5/30 edge it quietened my motor noise down straight away with in 10-20 seconds of start up, but the noise is slowly getting worse even with a 5/40 in it, its a little quieter but not much and a constant ticking, but the start and drive rattle has gone with a selenia star 5/40 oil.

drained the oil and put the castrol edge 10w60 in 2 weeks ago and its heaps better, quieter motor still a minor noise but 90-95% quieter and feels a bit tighter under acceleration, selenia star was good, but i think better suited to newer fresher motors, reved alot freer but was still noisy, quieter now and feels a bit tighter with the slightly thicker oil.

Magnatec in my VX SS and runs very quiet been using it for the past 3 or 4 years without any issues. I get it serviced at a workshop that works on a lot of LS1's
and they use a workshop grade Magnatec which is a 15w40 not the 10w40 that you buy from the retail outlets.

yeh when i pulled my motor down was all clean, mind you i do my oil every 5,000-7,500km's, mines done just over 200,000km's and it looked like a motor that had done maybe 30,000km's it was that clean, but that might be cause i did it so often, but was a lot quieter on the castrol and i'll use it again in my new build, be it edge or magnatec.

As people have said though, every engines different and like different things.

ill only use castrol edge 10w60 in my car. that advice comes from the owner of mainlube which make very very good oil but is very expensive and he knows this. through his research he found edge 10w60 to be the next best oil for the lsx motors bar none. its all to do with the film strength, as it is nearly twice as strong as its compeditors and this is where it reduces the engine wear. if you want a read jump onto the ls1 forum where mainlube is a sponsor and this info can be found

MAGNATEC IS HORRIBLE!!!! ive seen what it does to engines its litteraly like a magnet it sticks to everything. Ive done overhead cam replacements on cars that used magnatec and it was like one big rectangle of jelly sludge shit i had pull it all apart clean everything it filled up like a 1/4 of the bin with sludgy oil and he said oil pressure light was coming on you bet it was the ####ing oil so i have used Nulon #1 oil by far.

Never had a problem with Magnatec, been using it in my VX SS for around the last 4 years, nice and quiet and from what I can see looking in the rocker cover it is spotlessly clean inside. I get my VX SS serviced by a workshop that specialises in LSI's and all the 6lt variants and they service heaps of them and they use Magnatec in all of them.
It is the 15w40 workshop version not the 10w40 you buy retail. As a side note my daughter's Mazda 3 gets serviced by Mazda and they run the 15w40 version of Magnatec in all the Mazdas they look after. At the end of the day I guess it depends on how the car is driven and maintained.
