Default VY auto v6 - help

I am some what of a novice when it comes to engine mods. I know the very basics about the motor. From doing a bit of reading through this forum I have gathered that the best mods for my car would be a

    69mm Throttle body
    25mm manifold spacer
    12mm plenum spacer
    CAI
And 1.9.1 roller rockers - with new push rod????

Is that right ?? It's a stock vy engine. Is it worth doing these mods with a stock exhaust ???
Sorry for all the questions it's something I'd like to do I just wanna make sure what I'm doing is A. Right B. In the correct order C. Not going to waste money cause I should have done my headers or exhaust instead.

    Any help would be awesome

Your list looks the goods mate,id retain the stock throttlebody at the moment and get a good catback exhaust.A mandrel bent 2 1/2" will be plenty.Keep middle and rear resonator whatever you do or it will sound like a fartinacan, not cool.

Give your Airflow meter a clean aswell with CRC Contact Cleaner and make sure your car is in good allround running condition before starting mods though. If you have the money then get the headers and catback installed at the same time.

    Exhaust
    Rockers
    CAI
    Manifold spacer
    Plenum spacer

Yea I've been looking at either a 2 1/2 cat back setup I just dont want it to drone. It's a v6 I know that an I'm not pretending to have a v8 so what system do you think would suit that all I want is a nice note when you give it a boot full but quiet when I'm driving normally. Sorry about all the questions as I said I don't want to make the mistake of getting the wrong thing cause I'm under informed.

Unless you're planning on putting a large cam or supercharging your setup, I wouldn't worry about headers, money definitely could be better spend elsewhere.

As for an exhaust system you can use a redback system, or ideally a ex HSV unit.

    Hope this helps

    $165 or +$40 for delivery

Its 2 bolts and a clamp, could be done in 30 mins with 2 people or about a hour alone. Easy with hoist or ramps but still easy with jack and stands.

Save some money and do it yourself.

Depends on the type of tips if they're clamped they can be easy to attach. If they require welding not so easy

Ok I'm sold I know someone with a hoist an a welder so I'll do it myself. These systems off eBay are the same as what I'd get from a muffler shop ??

Yes and no lol,I wont go into it as there is no need.

A lot of the companies that sell well known exhaust systems on ebay get them from basically the same suppliers as where the workshops get them from. There is simply no other way unless they're counterfeit/knock off systems

What makes you say a decent set of extractors aren't worth it Steve?

There's always sets going second hand on ebay going for a couple hundred.

If your after an exhaust that doesn't drone I can not recommend "Sureflo" highly enough. They manufacture there own mufflers and specialise in systems that don't drone. They also use extra thickness material in areas of high wear.
Lukey are cheap crap. The end blew out of mine after 2 years
Then tried a redback, the drone drove me mad after 6 months. Saw surefloes ad for drone free and got one of their mufflers.
In hindsight it would have been cheaper to get quality the first time

The factory cast exhaust manifolds flow well, especially in the 3 rd and 4th gen commodores, given the fact that they’re not a log type design. Contrary to what people may say about them on here, if you go with an off the shelf extractor then you’ll lose more low end torque with these engines.

I’m not the only one who has a similar train of though as well, going by one of many of greenfoam’s response on the matter.

    extractors????

A quality cat back exhaust system alone seems work quite well on even dead standard ecotec with increases across the board. Don’t get me wrong you’ll still gain from using a set of extrators mid to top end just not as much as a cat back for less.

One could go a set of extrators if they wanted to as one of their last mods depending on their driving style I guess (more mid to top end driving), as you will lose torque down low.

If you had some more substantial mods such as a larger camshaft or forced induction then going extractors would certainly offer better value for money.

LS1’s for arguments sake are a different kettle of fish, but we’re not talking LS1’s :P

I’ve certainly heard very good things about Sureflo systems for sure (parden the pun :P )

A system which I’m a big fan of are the HSV items off say a similar era Clubsport, GST etc.

dude i would just double check your system first, as the very early series 2 still had the series 1 exhaust systems on them.. have a look under ya car, and if you find just 1 cat converter you have the series 1 system, i thought the same thing with my series 2. had to end up getting a series 1 instead
