Yes it’s normal workshop practice, nobody likes being recorded, possibly unawares whilst at work. I make a point of disconnecting my cams when I drop my car off as it’s a common courtesy. If people don’t trust their current mechanic then it’s probably time to find a new workshop where you do.

To get a rough ballpark price just take and send lots of photos to give them an idea of it’s condition, it’s not that hard if they want the work.

For a half decent open door full respray including engine bay and fitting a fibreglass body kit at an ok shop I would budget a minimum of $12-15k. obviously a lot depends on the current condition of the car/parts and any repairs needed. Try ringing around for some quotes first though.

FYI I recently had a cam changed on my ls3 including some common upgrades, i.e, trunnions, springs, timing chain, lifters with guide buckets, upgraded oil pump, shaved and cnc ported heads, dynotuned, etc. cost was over 8k and this was on a lowish km motor that had no prior problems/issues.

From my own personal experience it is just a numbers check to make sure everything still matches their database, so make sure that all numbers (engine, VIN, etc.) are clean and are able to be easily read. The only time I’ve encountered issues is when they don’t know where the numbers are or...
