i quite like the shape of the FG, the white looks great with the decals and the wheels.
are you planning on modding it any more?

CSP,you summed it up with a better overall package. To me that makes it a better car, even as a Holden man at heart I know a good thing from the blue oval when I drive one.

I think Holden owners have a hard time accepting that Ford can actually make a better car. Road tests suggest that the FG is superior to the VE in road manners in the cheaper models but it evens out a bit as the models climb the ladder. The new Ford Coyote V8's appear to have the wood on the HSV's for performance and the XR6 Turbo has been an amazing performer since BA days. The interior design of the FG is superior - that's one area where the VE has always lagged behind. Even the Series 2 looks cheap and dated.
Design is a very personal and subjective thing. I like the look of the F6E and some of the sports models. My only complaint is that the FG design just looks too much like the BF, even though every panel is different. If you're going to go to the expense of a new design, make sure it looks new, no matter how good the old model looked.
Unfortunately the sting of the AU is still fresh amongst FOMOCO's big wigs. That was the last time they did something that looked new and bit them on the behind in a huge way. In many respects AUSFOMOCO has never quite recovered. I quite like the look of the FG though. Don't quite agree with some of the other parts of your critique but have never driven (or even particularly looked at) the povo VE or FG.
The thing I am amazed at is how the product managers of Ford continually take a great product, run it way past it's prime with minimal investment along the way and then abandon it as a lost cause. Falcon wagon, LWB sedans and now (it appears) the XR8 to follow with the Territory on life support (new model coming soon however). None of these niches are all that significant but put together they represent a huge chunk of their capacity. Contrast that with the Commodore brand equivalent and you find a brand that is making the most of the available market and able to broaden it's horizons beyond Australia's shores.

I must admit that my comments regarding the superiority of the FG over the VE dynamics is based on reports in Wheels magazine shortly after the FG was released. I haven't driven one myself. In their reports, the comment was made that the FG had better turn-in, (ie initial steering response) and, if I remember correctly, better rebound control on rough roads. This applied to the basic models. As the specifications improved with upper level models, the situation narrowed and the sports models reversed the situation, with the SS superior to the XR8. The far better throttle response of the FG 6 cylinder engines also assisted in powering out of corners too.
With regard to the interior, the VE copped a fair bit of flak during its life for the poor fit and finish of various components. The smooth plastic centre console area came in for criticism for its cheap appearance and I don't really think this has improved, even with the Series 2. The silver finished plastics look like they belong in a Camry - really cheap and nasty.
Your comments about the AU are on the mark. Perhaps Ford IS reluctant to be too adventurous after that disaster, and they are obviously hindered by corporate design philosophy and the fact that they seem to have absolutely no export potential for the Falcon or Territory. It's pretty pointless manufacturing an Australian-market only model these days, as Holden has amply demonstrated.
