    Default My HJ/HQ Project

    Recently bought a HQ one tonner (the chassis) with a HJ front end.

    Has a partially worked 253 and a 4 speed auto.

    I also plan to either redo the wood in the tray or put a normal tonner tray on it, cannot decide on that one yet.

    Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated, since this is the first purely project car I have.

    It has a trimatic, I am honestly considering changing the tray.

    The only thing I like about it is it is unique.

    Trimatic is 3 speed

    I think the tray looks silly

    If it's a Trimatic, it's only got 3 gears....No way it can have 4.

    Unfortunately, with a 1 tonner, there is nothing you can do to make them look good IMO. I've never, ever seen a tonner with a tray that looks any good, they always look like an after thought.

    Its definately got 4, when I drove it, it seemed to stick in 3rd for what seemed an eternity. Then it clicked up a gear.

    Old owner said its a trimatic. I havent had a chance to get it up in the air because the thing is too low to get under

    Well, it's either 1 of 2 things.

    1) It's had a conversion to a 4 speed auto (Turbo 700)

    2) You're imagining the 4th gear change if it is infact still a Trimatic.

    I recently got my HQ/HJ running again and though I love the thing I think its time to get working on its overhaul.

    So far I want to:
    * Replace fuse box with blade type fuse box (bit of rust).
    * Electric water pump + electric thermo fans + overflow bottle
    * Remove the clutch fan
    * Paint job (much further down the track)
    * Custom dash, the current one only has a working speedo, and I use that term loosely because it sticks and is completely inaccurate because of it. I still want an old look, but with an after market digital speedo, temp gauges, volt, fuel (needs fixing it isnt accurate either full tank is showing 1/2 and hits empty at around 3/4).
    *Put in a hidden/partiually hidden sound system. Nothing major. Headunit, 2-4 Type G (or similar) speakers and tweeters.
    * Power windows.
    * Finding a higher output alternator.
    * Cold air intake, though not sure how it will work with a carby though.
    * Bucket seats and either replacing stock seatbelts with retractable modern style or going a racing harness.
    * Redoing all the wood in the tray, decided to keep it only because it is so unique. As everyone said its hard to make a one tonner look good since the tray is always the afterthought.
    * Dumper pipe exhaust out both sides just after the cab (legal in Darwin :P)

    Note: It did have a 4 speed, and just after getting the car running the first time it died, it now has a trimatic that is pretty close to dying as well.

    Any suggestions are always welcome even if its 'burn it' though it will be ignored if its stuff like that.
