Hey guys
Well I was just watching the v8 super cars and it looked like they have their front wheels cambered and got me wondering why do they do this? Sorry if it's a silly question but it's got me intrigued.
So they can corner at speed, if they kept the camber like a road car they could roll a tyre off the rim. this is a really bad explanation someone might be able to to go more into it.
Take it easy...But do take it...

ahh ok i see makes alot of sense now thanks mate guess I never thought of that.
There might be a bit more to it aswell, but thats what i remember being told about it, as i asked the same question.

Yeah I thought it was for fast cornering
As DLDHUB666 said, its to help cornering...
When the car going straight, the outside edge of the tyre has minimal load and is even a touch off the ground while the inside edge is taking most of the load, this is fine since in a straight line the front wheel are not doing alot.
Though a corner however, the car leans heavily on the outside edge. So if the wheel had no camber the inside edge would be doing nothing and the outside edge would be under massive load. So, put some camber on and it means that the load is better distributed across the whole contact surface and therefore gives better grip.
Therefore if the tyre has better grip going through the corner, then they can attack it faster.
Not sure if I explained this well, I would have done better in person using visual aids such as a beer bottle and a snag...
Bit of high level reading on camber:
Camber angle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Its not just the front wheels that have camber, they also have camber on the rear wheels as well, just not as much.

This is correct. Rear tyres have to have minimal camber so they have maximum grip in a straight line to get the power down.
They do have slight neg camber to assit with cornering but not as much as the fronts because they undergo less loads than the fronts plus if they had too much they would struggle to get the power down.
Neg. camber on fronts = less under steer.
^^^ You would be surprised at how many people will argue that you can't have camber on a live axle rear end.

Can too put neg camber into a stock rear axle....... Thats what the workshop press is forCan get about 1deg into it before you load the bearings too much... or so im told.
Jesterarts described camber well however there is also the "tucking"(due to sidewall stiffness) of the tyre that comes into settings.
Throw into the mix double suspension springs and other goodies all make a supercar crazy to set up![]()
TOE is also fun to talk about..

i wanna add my two cents, iv thrown massive amounts of camber at my machine, but difference is mines a drifter, and iv found that on opposite lock the castor tends to give the inside wheel (when turning either direction) positive camber, and when ur sideways, running on the sidewall of the tire is never good for it, so by running mega neg camber it ends up fairly neutral and quite square to the road on opposite lock.
heres some pics.
heres what becomes the outside wheel when drifting, notice the almost straight up n down-ness.
and then, straight on, you can see just how much negative camber i actually have.
