i know this is a commodore forum and when people think of drifting commodores dont exactly come to mind straight away but they are out there! and im not just talking about holding the tail out around a small 90 degree turn in the wet either. let me know if you like drifitng and what you think about setting up a commodore for the track!
What about Snakies down a dirt road for a couple of K's jumpin of ya Limiter?Jokes.
If I was more of a social person that I might have a car built for Driftinbut its fun to watch. heh
Your better off using a car which has proven itself to be a drift car and has a shit load of spare parts for it...
Commodores are family cars - they may drift but there are better options out there.
If you want though go for it, Id love to build a VR drfit pig but thats a lot of cash i dont have...
aZk.
at qld power cruise most of the drifter are in commodores and 9 times out of 10 they do better then the jap cars, nothing better then seeing a commie out drift a skyline, soarer ect one of the best is 5 0 man even the commodore wreckers in southport have a drift car
here is 5 0 man just found it on youtube
just buy a VN V6. its built for drifting =P
drifting does look fun. i wouldnt mind trying it one day as ive never done it before.
if i was to ever build a street/drift car id have to grab grandmas car.
AE86.... one of the best drift cars ever
dump a 1-uz in it with the 8 throttle bodies and a supra box behind it leaving it completely stock on the outside.
now im thinking about it... next holiday she goes on ill do this =P

but it sounds so much better =P
and afterall its something a little different (even though it has been done before)
or do what this guy did.
twincharged 2JZ AE86

I still say completely ruined. The 86 was the best on the touge, with a huge heavy front end it would lose all its handling capability and be weird as all hell. It needs a light motor with usable power (Like a 4AG) to keep its balance. For something like that you would be better to go with another car to start with, in my opinion. I'm a fan of keeping 80's JDM cars slightly nostalgic! Haha, just my opinion though.

pretty sure the 1uz only weighs 50kg more than the 4ag.
AND, the REAL reason people like 86's so much is because once upon a time they were cheap in japan. but we got the takumi tax.
s13's are the new 86's in japan.
even 50kgs more in an ae86 (base weight of 950kgs) is alot.
thats more than an extra 5% of weight added =P
just looked it up and its 110kgs more then the 4agze. extra 10% weight added =P
not exactly the best for its weight distribution (which is just about 50/50 anyway)
and yeah i do like keeping cars classic sweefu.
and i keep telling my grandma ill buy it (or drive it =P).(or cardboard body kit it when she is away on holidays =P)
and she is like... no (even though she wants to sell it).
one day ill coax her into it, and if i do it will always look 100% stock on the outside. even down to the toyota wheels =P
Im currently working on my VE ute for next years drift season.
Been drifting mine for about a year now and got some big upgrades happening

I drift roundabouts whenever water hits the asphalt![]()
Cheesy, that is impressive mate. Is the car also your daily driver? What sort of modifications have you done?

Yeah, its my daily driver.
As for mods
Cam, exhaust, HSV diff, coilovers and a good clutch
Im upgrading all the suspension atm getting ready the next season. Got all aftermarket lower control arms, trailing arms, sway bars, link kits and more
For the future im undecided to go a new 427 lsx or just add some F/I to this engine
I cop alot of slack for drifting my ute but i love it
good to see the feedback![]()
I get a few people respond poorly to a drift vs based on your average p plater spinning an open wheeler pulling out onto the road with the sub rattling the number plate off the boot giving the vr-vs a bad reputation. i thought of going for a light sedan with your typical turbo'd engine untill i noticed a vs maloo at barbagallo with a top mount super charger on a decent 304 build killing it! i figured my stock 96 vs 5L was a bad starting point... i find it sweet to drift once its out but it needs more power for higher speed slides and some decent suspensionthat'll get me started anyway
here is one of me.
Great sport to watch that's for sure. My mates do it and we even went to japan and they compete in the G1GP. I went with them in november this year and had great time. They got good placings and are doing it again next year. I'm going to back with them next november to watch, can't wait.
They also competed in the first round of ADGP at Calder, that was a great weekend away too.
cheesy, nice video![]()
I find it boring to watch but fun to do.
I never intentionally purchased my car for it but its the perfect platform.
I have coilovers on their way and the gearbox booked in to get rebuilt in Feb (after that but not necessary I'm getting a 4.3 1.5 way cusco diff) then I'm going to take it to public drift days alongside my mates cars just as a hobby to go along with my lasertag career =P
Quite excited to get on the track for the first time but I think ill keep it pretty conservative.
You will have tonnes of fun mate! What coilovers did you go with? Did you steer away from the 2-way diff to conserve some daily comfort? I'd invest in water/oil temp gauges and oil pressure gauge to keep an eye on things, make sure you have some good brake fluid too.

I don't think you'd need more power, you don't need a tonne of power for drifting, I find technique is more important (like most driving imo) I started driving my 100kw N/A R31 skyline (RB30E) and couldn't lock two corners together at first, now still with 100kw I can lock consecutive corners without any worries. I think its more important to have a solid diff (tight LSD or spool) and work on your technique.

Sweefu has the right idea. Low power = more skill, high power = less skill. Im not saying drifting itself doesnt need an origional basis of skill though.
I drift on forzaid love to do it in real life though. Might come true one day soon.
