i race karts...
the sport can be as expensive or as cheep as you make it. basic setup will cost a few grand, a kart a chassis and some gear to run it with.
depenens what class u want to run,
senior national uses a Yamaha "J" engine
Clubman uses a yamaha "S" engine
rotax uses a rotax engine
and leaped uses a leaped engine simply
clubman is prolly the easiest to start at. average a clubman engine will cost u from $800 - $1500 ROUNDABOUTS depending on the condition of the motor. and a chassis (a decent one) from say $1000-$****loads
you dont really need the latest equipment to be competitive, i run an older monaco gp2 chassis and it does fine, i can pace with the new karts in it no probs.
bar that u need a trailer to get your gear to and from the track.
tyres are worth about $230 on average for a set, they will laste you 5-6 race meetings usually.
you will also need a race suit (second hand from like $50 to new about $300) helment and gloves.
membership at a track and a licence that you get thru the club.
really it will cost u about 3k to get into the sport.
a lap timer or something of that nature is also a must, but u dont need one straight off the batt.
my opinion of the sport... its a fun sport, great to go racing, great fun, but the whole attitude that goes with it sucks. i make sure i dont fall into this catagory but a lot of people are quite up nose about it, they have the whole "im better than you" thing going, but just ignore them.
i race at gippsland in victoria,

its all good fun. if your half serious about taking it up then go visit your nearest track on a race weekend.
im not sure about queensland but usually down here in victoria club race meetings are the last sunday of every month, that makes this coming sunday a meeting. it will be the last meeting of the year so get down and have a look.
it will be the off season so u can get a kart and have a practise ofer the chrissy break if your serious about it...
ahwell thats my $0.02 so yeah. any questions just pm me
