Cruel blow for Team Vodafone in the desert:
    Release Date: 02/11/2007

Team Vodafone’s Jamie Whincup and Craig were struck a mighty blow and surrendered the V8 Supercar Championship Series lead after a spectacular early race tangle at the Desert 400 in Bahrain.

Whincup and Lowndes both became embroiled in a big crash with Team Sirromet Wines’ Paul Morris that trashed two cars and left former Championship leader Jamie Whincup with near terminal damage that effectively ended his race.

The race was won by polesitter Mark Winterbottom with Garth Tander third and the resurgent Steven Johnson fifth in the Jim Beam Ford of Dick Johnson Racing.

“The car was awesome today,” said Winterbottom of the machine that one Wednesday was sitting on the Shaikh Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa Highway after a traffic accident.

“We had a very good platform car when we came here so it was a good start. To have a car that is quick is one thing and tyre life here is another.

“You could cruise around and take a bit of a break. We also had luck go our way for a change.”

Lowndes lap one big contact, touched wheels with Morris, Lowndes slammed into the wall as did Morris. Whincup also had damage having just averted hitting the wall along with his team-mate. The Championship leader recovered brilliantly but was way down the field.

While Whincup failed to limp home with damage to the right rear, Lowndes smashed sideways into a concrete barrier and sprung back onto the track into oncoming traffic. It was a near thing that he was not cleaned up by the field coming through.

It means Lowndes will start race two tomorrow from the back of the grid. It pushed Garth Tander, who finished second behind Mark Winterbottom, into the overnight Championship lead.

“As soon as we knew Craig was out and Jamie was having dramas we went to a very conservative strategy,” said Tander on hunting down Winterbottom.

“As Indy has proven and now here is proving there are plenty of twists and turns to this Championship. Now it’s a matter of building as many points as I can over the weekend.

“I’m certainly not going to hang it into the fence tomorrow but if there is an opportunity to win the race we will go for it as we have all year.”

For Johnson his third at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and today is turning the corner for the establishment team.

“It’s been a long time coming,” he said.

“I’ve had my fair share of midfield battles which aren’t that much fun. It makes such a difference racing with these guys up the front. It is very hard but very clean racing.

“And being here in a sprint round is a massive step forward for the team.”

Qualifying threw up some varied results but as the surface began to get more grip teams were able to make the most of fresh tyres. After a slippery practice session things began returning to normal with times getting better through the session.

That’s when Winterbottom struck with a scorching lap immediately after James Courtney, then his Stone Brothers team-mate Russell Ingall and Tander had a share of the top of the sheet.

The Team Vodafone pair were probably the most surprising of the teams that didn’t make the final 10 with Lowndes 11th and Whincup 14th. Todd Kelly was another not to make the top ten, finishing 13th on the grid.

FPR’s second driver Steven Richards also had on off day qualifying 19th having come in third in practice yesterday.

Tasman Motorsport veteran Greg Murphy continued his recent form streak by ducking into 10th and pushing Lowndes out of the final session.
Race 1 was defiantly an interesting race, after the truck crash on Wednesday and Lowndes and Whincups DNFs. Congrats to Garth for regaining the championship lead and to Mark Winterbottom for his 4th Pole and first race win after the truck crash on Wednesday.

    Championship Points after Race 1:

    Garth Tander 512

    Jamie Whincup 501
    Rick Kelly 481
    Craig Lowndes 473

Do you really think the general has any answer to the fords?
Steven Johnson is even beating us......What has happenned ...we are in the also rans...maybe this project blueprint has gone full circle and has done what it was designed to do pull us back to the field...weve slipped behind...sick of seeing that blue **** in front....championship is tight but really behind tander theres nothin
Geeze I thought the first day was bad the next day was worse not a commodore in the top 6...what is Paul Morris thinking?
The ford dominance is making the racing a bit bland....its bad when you resort to being entertained by the mid field crashes and forget the front cause its its not goin to change....watch out Tony theres a lot of commodore fans feeing a bit less interested in the whole show...it started at Sandown and its gathering some momentum

Project Blueprint is doing exactly what it was meant to do and unfortunately the racing is getting worse and worse as the years go on, and while it would be helping to increase the number of ford supporters watching the V8s it cant be helping the number of Holden supporters watching them. I for one am beginning to get sick of the boring racing, bring on production Holden vs. Ford racing.
