The VN has design features which dated very quickly and now, 20 years later, those "features" let the overall design down badly.
For example, the flattened top line to the rear wheel arch - ugly in '88 and still ugly today. The lack of any flaring over the wheel arches, the grey anodised trim around the side windows, the dash design, plain Jane front end...and a steering wheel that should never have seen the light of day.
I had a VN and it was a reliable car but despite maintining the car in top condition, the brakes were crap and completely inadequate for the performance the car had, the steering loose and the suspension sloppy. The best thing you could say about the looks of the car was that it was clean but boring.
There are design features to the VE I don't like, but to most peoples' eyes, it is a far more attractive car than any standard VN was.
