    Default Opinions - Engine Covers

    Hey all,

Thinking about pulling off my engine covers and painting them up.
Bit stuck on colours though so far, here's something we've come up with so far that doesn't look TOO bad.
    Thoughts ??

Its a shitty photoshop, not anywhere as good with the program as I used to be.

Krisp, with anodising, isn't that done a special way??
ie, wouldn't be able to do it myself?

Cheers VLC86, I think it'd come up alright too, better than in the pic at least.

Not sure how easy/hard it'll be to do the rocker covers though, I'd assume I can just take the covers off and put a rag over the parts so no crap got in there??

I have to go down to an auto store to see if I can buy some allen keys to fit, the current screws in there all seem to be semi rounded. Looks like they might 4.5" or something as I have 4 and a 5 and it seems to be somewhere in the middle. If that doesn't work, then I dunno how I'll be able to get em out, Will probably replace them with new screws etc to avoid this happening again

Ah cool, got a spray painter mate that might be able to help me out with that if I choose to go that way.

Having issues getting the bolts loose though, anyone got any tips for allen key bolts that have been rounded ?
My allen keys don't want to turn em at all.

    Woohoo!
got the engine covers off this morning!
So stoked, the easy outs actually made things easy.. who'da thunk it??
Still having issues with the rear spoiler, but that'll get sorted this weekend hopefully.

Will have to clean the covers up and sand em back and then get em ready for spraying sometime this weekend also (best to do it whilst we're having such hot days I think!)

Found my throttle cable looked a bit slack too so I tightened that up also a little, hopefully she'll drive with a bit more response in the pedal by doing that..would be nice, but we'll see :P

    Polish the covers. Looks mint.

Anodising isn't cheap. Similar process to chroming. Might cost you $200 to do that cover.

    Polished metal finish.
It wont look like chrome. It looks better IMO.

Just google Polished Alloy to see what I mean.

might give the middle and two rocker covers the polished look, I think it'll come up well, and I can probably do it whilst they remain on the car

    hmmm good point... spewing.
With the middle piece. is that part of a plenum?
Is it very difficult to remove?
the rocker covers look reasonably straight forward, undo bolts and out they come, and then just chuck some clean rags over the parts to avoid bits getting in there.
From a quick glance at the other piece it looks a little more difficult to remove ???

    Nah its just a cover.
I've got some 5ltr rocker covers here if you're willing to wait until the new year. I can polish them up for you.

How much would you be wanting for those if I was to go that way soop ?

Update: Covers sanded back with 180, just applied 1 coat of primer, then waiting 5 mins, applied a second coat straight over the top.
will leave this to dry a little while, about an hour or something, will flip it over and do the bottoms after that (bottoms I'm not being AS anal about as no one will see them, plus they'll get dirty as hell anyway).
bloody primer can was spitting globs a little at one stage, second coat seemed to hide these a little more, but I figure I've got to sand it back a little anyway so it should be right.

Edit: Here's some pics so far, sorry about the shadows.

    What I started off with...

    Sanded, ready for primer

Mate, polish them like soop said, looks heaps better. My brother had a vs berlina and he got the middle cover painted the same colour as the car and polished the side and front cover, looked mint. If i can find a photo i'll chuck it up for you to look at.

    cheers Juzo. Would be good!

soop, sounds interesting, could be keen!

Okay, here's a couple pics of the top side done in primer.

Here's a couple of pics of the underneath, little bit better than what I started with.
Have just done the first coat of primer, might not do a 2nd for the underside, no point really.

And here's some with them in primer.

Will let em sit now for a while, give em a good chance to dry up properly.
Shouldn't take long though, its about 35 degrees out.

    Okay...
Sanded the side covers back today with 600 grit - wet.
then got some more grease and wax remover, wiped it down, wet it down to remove any further residue, dried again.
here's a pic from before painting

    I've started spraying.
First coat was a mist coat, second was a little more.

Don't want to do TOO many coats, probably 2-3 more maybe.
3rd one I'm planning to try get most of it covered fairly well, but if I have to I'll wait till the 4th one or so.

Only done the tops so far in painting, should have that done this morning, then hopefully do the underneath this afternoon.

On a side, note... anyone know where to find those allen key type screws with the dome head on them?
Went to repco and bunnings yesterday and neither had any

Can still buy the screws brand new from Holden. I bought some from Motor Traders (I think you have Coventrys over there) the other day for when mine go on. Otherwise try a Holden Dealer.

Edit: The part number is 92138533 shouldn't cost more than $1 each screw. I bought 2 sets. That part number is for one screw, so you need 5 of those.

was thinking maybe black for the words, because It'd go with the front part which I've decided not to do entirely blue.

think it'll be a pain in the ass to do the words though, not sure.

Get some modeling paint and a small paint brush.

Black will look shit. Too dark.
