Well, im gonna start by saying, NO im not crazy! i am not wasting my money on my POS laser, well no more then about 500 bucks anyway.
Basically i have had this little blue coupe laser for 5 years as our paddock basher/ round the house workhorse, and because we got it when i was only young i have grown attached to it .
Its in far below average condition, it had done over 400,000 km in the early 90's by the service records in the log book so god only knows how many its done now as the odo goes to 99 999 then goes back to 0, haha fantastic. I have to hand it to the japs, engine has copped an absolute hiding from me, my brothers and the previous owner, (my dads mate) and after all that still starts and runs pretty damn smoothly, shes got the typical laser tapping cranking and blows plenty of blue but never misses a beat, coughs or splutters ect. Cant remember how much i got it for, i reckon it might have been a carton of beer deal, my old man got it for us. Dads mate got rid of it because he crashed it into a tree and bent up the front a little, hence no grill or headlight surrounds, dents ect.
But recently the Auto trans (awesome, how many old laser were auto and this one just had to have one) has decided to pack it in, well it was more of a forced self destruction from me reving it neutral and bumping the stick, oooooppps. Still moves but is very whiny and you can hear it not wanting to spin on the starter, must have busted a bearing or clutch pack, something terminal nevertheless.
Anyways i got my hands on a KB meteor for next to nothing as it suddenly got oil pressure issues so they stopped driving it. Replaced the oil pump and shes was good as gold, had another laser engine so i robbed the pump off that. The oil pump had cracked and was just pumping into the sump, handy.
The meteor has only done 90,000km which is genuine as far as i can see and the odo actually goes into 6 figures.
So plans are to put all the meteor mechanicals into the laser as they are all still practically new and get the laser back up to a more useable shape. plus the meteor is manual woohoo!.
Why bother? Yeh its not worth it but i have to keep myself ammused somehow, why not just use the meteor instead an get rid of the laser? i hate meteors, they are even uglier then lasers, the boot just looks like an after thought. Plus i like working on something different rather then just my commodores or an old holden in some form or another.
I dont really have any pics of the big job, ill post up the few i have but a few are off my phone so are pretty terrible.
Down the paddock:
And this one is off my phone, had my VK's 202 in the trailer right at the back and the wheel were lifted up pretty high, after tis photo i put the whole VP v6 front end and engine in the back of the trailer as it wont fit in any further then just on the tailgate and the back wheels where lifted so high up you could just spin them by hand hahaha.
Updates will come as i start doing stuff to it but i have to rebuild a grey motor first an get that out of the way, hopefully by 4th of jan ill be able to rip into it.

Hehe, I love little projects like this.
the jap models came with fuel injection and turbo, if you could pick up one of those motors she'd be an awesome sleeper. there was also a carby turbo model released one of those would be pretty awesome too
"The mind is its own place, and in itself, can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven."
apparently wasting my time with 97 cubic inches
milk doesnt come in 1.6 litres
my geminis
Yeh id love to get my hands on a turbo setup with fuel injection, even a carbie setup would be pretty good, ive been scouting ebay for a while for cheap bits but havent seen anything so far. Will keep looking! But i dont really want to waste too much money on it, but i can see me getting carried away haha.
It would be cool to see that laser with a 202, 4spd and banjo diff in it!
Hmmmm i have all of the above lying around....... that would be a weapon.
Love little projects like this, if it's only a paddock basher, cut the exhaust![]()
Well today i attacked the rust in the hatch, its the only real rust the car has. Its worse then it looks from the outside the whole inner is ruined but you cant see so who cares, i just neutralized it to stop it getting worse and just sprayed over it.
On the outside i used some metal mend to fill the holes to make it look a little neater. Its a good car learn on and practice, doesnt matter if it doenst look great cause one it will. Didint have any blue paint so it stayed in yellow undercoat. Ill paint it blue one day but as long as its not getting worse its not a high priority.
A few pics of the outside and interior, and the engine bay.
And how the engine mount is sitting, Nice! front cross member has bowed from impact with the tree, kinda lucky the tree has hit smack bang on the crossmember so the radiator mounts and front end hasnt moved much but it was enough to pop this mount out, the gearbox is where it should be but the crossmember aint, pic makes it look pretty out of whack but its not really bad at all.

What a depressing car! Hahaha
Lol yerp, i dont think its ever seen or felt the words TLC, hahaha Poor thing has had a hard life. These Pics arent doing it justice though.
Tell you something scary though, its was registered for ages in the same condition its in now, that includes no rear end bushes, complete with rear wheel steering lol.
Doesnt suprise me. NSW has annual roadworthy check, but its not worth the paper its written on. I got a few cars passed on the promise that i'd fix them.... eventually.
Pulled apart the back half of the interior for a tidy up, and cause im putting int the metoer dash i resprayed the panels brown with some left over paint i had.
How she looked to start with, in tatters as you can imagine:
How it looked after removal of everything and a pressure wash (yes inside the back):
Well maybe the tailgate wasnt the only rust it had, found this under the rear window, rather nasty but it cleaned up fine:
And a few pics after a quick spray, nothing fantastic but its never going to be with old rotten plastic panels, still have to do something with the speakers and mounts:
Seats are still a little wet cause i blasted them with the pressure washer and some cleaner stuff hence why they look soapy a little still:
Heres the meteor's engine, as you can see its a lot cleaner and fresher looking:

i dunno wht to say lmao keep up the good work lol
At 43 a wealth of info , but still heaps to learn
Its just something to keep me busy while i having nothing else to do, didnt get my Grey motor block yet so i cant really do much until i get that.
A mate of mine had one of these on his farm, we flogged it to death, Top Gear Hilux style. It eventually gave in after a mighty effort. It now sits in the paddock as a mobile fly trap (hole in roof, cone shape insert, dead sheep inside)
We used the rear hatch as a ghetto FMX ramp, rolled it, took some singaporean exchange students for a 'drive', used it to carve a rally track through the scrub and genarally trashed the poor thing, seeing yours brings back good memories!
My Genesis Blue VS Acclaim
the back looks much better even though its yellow, decent repairing job by the looks man :thumbs up: I reckon it's reasonably straight for a 30 odd year old car and an ex-paddock basher
Yeh thanks man, its good practice for rust repairing, i would have sprayed it a different colour primer but i didnt know i had any at the time haha.
And ^^ you certainly got your moneys worth out of your mates lol, how she go after a roll? or was that the end of it? Theres nothing like good old fashioned paddock bashing, to many young people never get to do it these days, its kinda sad.
Well today, (dont have pics folks) i ripped out the front seats and carpet, and i found a kill switch under the dash which i never knew existed, someone must have loved it once if they were worried about it getting stolen. Spose they would have got stolen left right and center back in their day considering how simple the wiring is.
Anywho found a cracked seat mount so im gonna weld it up somehow. Other then that it just looks like a laser with no front seat or carpet so you get the picture.
Well, it had heaps of oil in the carby and we ratchet strapped it to the floor of the supa shed, then we 'massaged' it back into shape with the forklift forks![]()
It lived to fight another day
My Genesis Blue VS Acclaim
Here a couple of pics of how the interior is looking, theres wires and stuff everywhere but the dash comes out really easy, much easier then a commodore one, the biggest pain is you have to take out the bonnet cable so now i have to be careful not to shut the bonnet cause its a pain to get open again (yer i closed it, never again i hope)
And todays effort so far, i got the front straightened enough for the engine mount to pop back in and front bar looking pretty straight still needs to pulled back out a little more.

Drop a BPT in it![]()
Find an old SR20....
But still 202 + 4spd, solid mound an old banjo diff and have the wheel stick a foot out the back of the car!!!
Yeh all of the above would be pretty sweet, SR20 would make it the ultimate sleeper, imagine peoples faces when they get blown away by this bucket of rusty crap with bog flying off hahahaha, probs easier to put in a BPT?
Well heres how its looking, interior is almost done except the door trims. Its looks weird cause ive got the manual pedals but an auto gearstick hehe.
And ive got the front straightened out pretty well, good enough for the bonnet to close properly and the radiator to fit in fine so im might just leave it as it is. Engine is almost ready to come out all ive got to do is figure out your suppose to pull out the CV's cause ive never done any before, pretty sure they just yank out of the gearbox though, there completely stuffed so it doesnt matter if i break one.

Engine is out, so i gave the engine bay a quick pressure wash and it came up ok, now to rip the engine out of the meteor and start picking out all the best parts to go into the laser..........

Sounds like a good project mate, crapload of work involved but you will learn heaps in the process
You planning to get this laser on the road again or you just doing this project to give yourself something to do?
