The word ‘hoon’ didn’t exist in legislation a few decades ago, so if you were tempted by a quick traffic light ‘performance comparison’ not too long ago you may have been irresponsible…but you wernt classified a hoon.
Anyway I had a wedge celica with an imported twin solex , twincam motor which I replaced the orig 56kw slug. That car was more pose than go even with the twin cam, but one night in a remote suburb (Lonsdale was then!) A guy was tempting me and he had an early seventies escort panel van of all things. He was egging me on and there was no other cars in sight, and it was late. It didn’t have big wheels/tyres, it looked like a tradesmans van with dings and scratches and nothing to really make it sound like it was worked.
He left me so far behind that he was waiting at the next set of lights to just to ‘give it to me’. I see WRX and turbo Nissans launch like that regularly these days, but I suspect he had a 2 litre turbo (what else was available then?) at least, with a quite exhaust.
Got a sleeper story to tell?
Omega (caprice rims)
Yamaha VX110
There is a reason why Commodore is number 1 since 1979. Its the best Aussie car. I loved my VL and I love my VE. I cant help it.
my mate had a vauxal chevet little 2 door thing old as was painted up hot as.everyone used to pull up beside us thinking they would just eat the little puss box then he would floor the twin cam turbo that was shoehorned in there and just anialate most cars was lots of fun definatly not what anyone was expecting
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
I heard straight cut gears coming from a non riced pulsar sss the other day. just rims. i thought to myself this car has some big bucks thrown in it. so i decided to see how quick it was (knowing i was going to get chopped!) so i pull up at 80 and was just going to give the thumbs up as appreciation for a nice car but he didnt look and dropped it back so i floored it and pulled away untill he hit boost and flew past. he gave me the thumbs up and i gave it to him back.
to someone who has no idea how straight cut gears sound or if its just sitting at the lights, you would never know. the exhaust wasnt stupidly loud either. so that was a huge bonus.
My workmate worked with a guy that had an old beat up RX2 with some mad crazy worked rotary in it. It ran stock wheels, didn't have a straight panel, it was quiet as and even had venetians in the back windows. The only thing that gave it away as a sleeper was the racing seats in the front.
i think vn_luke has one of the ultimate sleepers
1995 Manual HSV Clubsport
Wade Cam :: 9.2:1 CR :: Pacemaker headers :: Twin 2.5" Exhaust :: VT Brakes
1991 Supercharged VN Berlina
9 PSI SC14 Intercooled :: Genie headers :: Twin cats :: HM Twin 2.25 exhaust :: 3.45:1 LSD
i love sleepers, i like to think my VY is one, no badges or spoiler, people tend to think its a V6 auto![]()
my old man had a EH wagon painted satin black with pink flames :P in the late 80's early 90's that had a turbo 179 in it... hed rebuilt it with all decent internals and used to leave the brand new VN SS's for dead...
and my uncle had a 79 celica the one with a fastback sorta look, was original caramel colour, it had a worked holden 308 with Nos...
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
doesnt belong to me but is a mate of mine car very good sleeper and bloody quick too faster than it power output suggests

900kg and well over 250bhp = crazy power to weight ratio.
Since then I've had a V8 soarer and I now have a mild modded supercharged V6 VT and both are sooooo much slower than the excel was.

talking to a friends of a friend who had a twin turbo VT clubby not really a sleeper it was pretty nuts of course you cant tell its twin turbo till it takes off kind of sleeper

apparently wasting my time with 97 cubic inches

my geminis
i have never owned a "sleeper" but i once beat a 351 Falcon in my Gemini with it's 1.6 litre big block powerit was easy really!!! it had a webber carb, a mild grind cam, and a sports exhaust system. I pulled up next to this thing at the lights on the Broadway in Sydney..... i was with a couple of mates and felt like being a knob... so i started to rev the crap out of the Gemini and inch forward at the lights....... i was pegging the poor Gemini at about 6,000rpm...... the lights started to change.... the 'coon revved his engine.... i revved mine even more..... they changed green!! i took off normally
The falcon sat there smoking his tyres majorly!!! i was in 3rd gear down the road a ways before he got some traction and passed me like i was standing still. Me and my mates were laughing so hard i couldn't see. I had to pull over so i could gather myself enough to continue driving.

- OVERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the rear.
- HORSEPOWER is how fast you hit the wall.
- TORQUE is how far you take the wall with you.
a bloke aroun here had an awesome sleeper it was and old hj kingswood with the original flaking paint job, original wheels with hubcaps and basically just looked like crap but had a turbo ls1 under the bonnet was funny watching him smash the ricers lol
Any of the older members who live around the Dandenong area wuold remember the old 1964 Cortina with a 454 Chev . It looked standard on the outside right down to the venetians on the rear window and the factory wheel trims .
there are three types of people in the world , those who can count and those who can't
i got me a sleeper 1 in the ear and one on the road
the road one is commodore charged stockies plain white no stickers no noise its good fun to have
had and older gt4, looked like a standard celica but went like a wrx, was nice, even thought about getting another one.
Chev badges are an instant fail
Had abit of a play with a xr6 turbo a couple of months ago and was beating him quite easily. (he keeped coming back) Then when i was at the drags last time, i had the bonnet up and 2 guys came over having a bit of a look and said, Oh thats why you keeped blowing my mates xr6 away. They then told me that he was pissed, because he had justed uped the boost and got it retuned a week before and a standard looking vp wagon was walking away from him. I still had the standard zorst on then so it was ultra quite, so the only way to know it was modified was to be close enough to hear the bov going off when i was changing gears, which he wasn't.

i know my ute suprises a lot of people its an old builders ute. you carnt here the blower, it has a full zorst and it quiet. its never washed, well if i do more paint comes off and is full of dints. i do cop quite a lot of crap over it from friends. not long ago a new xr8 owner as showing off his new shiny d#ck extension to his mate. he could not of hung out of his car any further to make shore that every one could see he was driving it. well every one knows how the rest of the story goes but he wasent very happy.
Iv got a s2 rx7 with a 12a mild port and 3'' exhaust making about 100kw, but it only weighs 900kg. Its white and completely stock apart from being lowered. Such a fun car to drive.
