    Default WOW Supagas LPG

Just filled my car up with LPG from supagas and the difference is unbelievable. The car runs so much smoother compared to gas from service stations. Has anyone else had the same experience with LPG from supagas. Oh and plus its always cheaper than the servos

Yep, I too have heard that Supagas is 100% propane. From what I've read on LPG, LPG has 2 main ingredients in varying quantities: Propane and Butane. As propane/butane is odorless, another gas is added in small quantities, giving it that "gassy" smell. (From what I've read, the smelly gas is added to allow for leak detection of LPG).

The thing is, while Supagas (which I think is 100% Propane) will give you more power (burns quicker than Butane), you'll do less mileage from a tank; this is due to Propane releasing less energy per molecule then Butane when broken down (If you ever did first year chem at uni, you'll know that propane contains 3 carbons linked together with Hydrogen hanging off these carbon molecules, while Butane has 4 carbons linked together, again with Hydrogen molecules hanging off it. When these links are broken, energy is released. As Butane has more links, it releases more energy per molecule).

So in summary, if you want power, fill up with a high propane LPG mix, eg supagas. If you want more mileage, fill up with a high Butane mix. I think most BP outlets sell a 50:50 propane/butane mix. I've found when filling up my car at the various retailers that I get the best economy from BP and Mobil LPG. The worst economy was from Safeway LPG. The thing is, I the car I used to drive (VY on SVI) didn't feel any more powerful using Safeway LPG when compared to Safeway LPG.

ive never seen supergas in adelaide, i run shell gas 95% of the time, but i got BP last week and ive already got about 20-30kms more from my first increment on my gauge, BP is generally a few cents more expensive (even with their 2c loyalty card) but whens its cheap i buy that, feels a bit better too

yeah i fill up at safeway normally, filled up at mobil once and got 50kms more out of a tank. that's a lot when when you're only talking about 250kms

I always fill up at BP... I've found best economy and general feel of the car with BP gas. My dad (a gas installer) highly recommends Mobil also, reckons it's the best... so if I have to I'll sometimes fill up at Mobil. For some reason I prefer BP though. And he says to stay away from Safeway and Coles service stations... gas is awful and leads to problems.

On BP gas I can easily get 600km+ on a tank doing highway driving. I regularly drive from Melbourne to Albury to see family and one tank gets me there, some driving around seeing people throughout the weekend and at least half way back home. VZ Calais on SVI.

I mainly fill up at Safeway LPG for my VT Calais.
The average calculation for consumption is 17l/100km's
Lowest I have seen it down to on LPG highway driving is 13.9l/100k's however on Petrol 8.7l/100k's
Average cost of around $28 per fill up and avg of 9cents per KM to drive.

There you go , lots of figures for you to ponder over!

    Cheers

the mistake was the small tank, not LPG!

No, cmon Cris, admit it, it was the entire conversion, not just the tank

hi, i had my VS SS 5L converted to LPG with a IMPCO kit , the guy told me MOBIL was the best autogas and ULP, the only problem with supagas 100% propane is on hot days, if you fill up with normal autogas the propane and autogas liquify at a different pressure/temp ( not quite sure on the actual issue) but it can cause your car not to start for upto 40 mins. So in warm weather if using SUPAGAS propane stick with it as mixing the 2 can cause issues.

also if you want better performance take the car back when next due for gas service and ask them to tune it better, they undertune the gas to look after the arses so you less likely to damage the engine.

lol, i will also admit that getting a gas ring was a bad idea. do not get a gas ring. wouldn't mind a gas research carby though

yeah donut tanks are a waste, defeats the purpose of getting gas i reckon, they also costed about $500 more when i got my long tank put in

    ??????

Thats a incomprehensible statement, and I am wondering where you have come across such dribble you pass as information.
Under tuning to save my ass??
Only thing that is going to damage the engine (in many tens or hundreds of thousands of Km's, if ever) is running EXCESSIVELY rich or excessive detonation.
With LPG running too rich will run the engine valves far too hot and shorten life, you can run LPG lean and not hurt engines, but it will be noticeable as loss of power, as will very rich running.
I personally (and EVERY fitter I know) tune LPG systems to their absolute peak for the application, ie. dual fuel or straight gas etc..
We aim for the gas processor (which ALL V6 commodores have to run by law) to control the mixtures so we achieve emission compliance and maximum power and economy.
Never have I heard of anybody tuning to save their arses?
And being a commodore there is nothing we can do to the state of timing, which could foresee ably cause detonation damaging an engine, but as every one knows Timing is non adjustable (easily anyway) on nearly all cars nowadays.

What he needs to do to obtain MAXIMUM power is to get a dyno tune or find someone with a good live air fuel ratio meter that can set the wide open throttle mixtures perfectly then he will gain the maximum power his particular system will allow.
The biggest issue with old school mixer ring gas systems is that you will always loose power and performance.
You go from a 80+mm throttle body giving great air flow and then place a 5hitty BBQ ring mixer in front of it that is 35mm opening and its elementary that you will loose a HEAP of performance.
You might as well just stick a few tennis balls up the exhaust.

Get a real gas system that does not run such a restrictive mixer or go injection if you want power, but if you just want cheap conversions prepare to loose performance.

mate, i have a shitty gas ring... is it easy to switch it to something better (not injection), keeping the same converter etc?

Safeway is crap, I avoid it as much as I can.

    I am a loyal BP/Mobil customer! loving the 39 - 40 cents a litre at the moment!!!

The best thing I can think of is a variable venturi mixer, but they are VERY hard to get now.
Unfortunatly you can't run a GRA mixer or even a Impco, that have much better airflow, with your converter. You are stuck with running a BBQ mixer and thats it.
Like I said a variable venturi mixer will open up the centre bore at high air speed so there is FAR less restriction on air flow at high revs. But it will close up again at low revs/ idle and allow the coverter to get a good vacuum signal it needs to idle properly and run well at lower revs.
If you just run a huge diameter mixer you'll find the engine will not idle well and it will flatspot etc.. if you tune it for max revs. The biggest size mixer they run on a V6 is about 36mm from memory!! And going from a 80+mm T/B to that its clear your loosing air flow.
The variable mixer will give you the best of both worlds, a small diameter for excellent idle and low rev drive ability and then open right up and provide next to no restriction on air flow at high RPM.
good stuff if you can get it.

haha oh well. the system idles really well (much better than petrol), and if you drive normally it's fine (can't even notice a power difference there), but yeah it's not good when you put your foot down so i just switch to petrol when i need to. that's what i get for buying cheap , but yeah it's not that bad.

Theres about 100 mobile vehicles that drive around, always dark green. Know of holden and falcon utes, and saw a hiace or the like van the other day.
