Default Rude and ignorant elderly people

Ok, here's a bit of a rant on something other than traffic fines.

First of all, I have to say that to many members of the forum, I may appear to be one of those I'm about to complain about because of my age (57), but I feel I'm caught between the elderly and young people because I was brought up to respect others, be polite and give way to the elderly or disabled and ensure I wasn't pushing in.

Three times yesterday whilst at the local shopping complex, I was "involved" in minor incidents with older people. At least I have to assume they were older than me, based on their appearance.

First, I'm standing in line, waiting to be served. Older woman walks up and when the store attendant had finished serving the person in front of me, this old bitch just buts in and totally ignores me. After she had been served and left, the attendant and I discussed the incident and she agreed that the woman had been rude and ignorant in her behaviour.

Next, at another shop, wife and I are looking at meat for dinner. Older woman just pushes through between us and the counter as she looks at what's on offer. No "excuse me", nolthing. another rude and ignorant bitch.

Final straw. I was walking along one of the corridors and went to turn a corner. Nearly get hit by an old bloke pushing a shopping cart. He immediately berates me for not watching where I was going and went to push past me, again nearly hitting me. I stepped in front of his trolley and let him have it with both barrels. The corner I was negotiating was blind anyway - I couldn't have seen him until we met. This old shit really wanted to argue and I came within one inch of picking a shopping bag from his trolley and dropping it on the floor. I got the final word in - told him to f*** himself and walked off.

As I said, I have difficulty with these rude old buggers because I'm closer to their age than they seem to realise and we were all brought up in a different time, when respect for others was part of our upbringing. What has happened to these people that they are so rude, ignorant and arrogant and seem to think that the world owes them a living?

My appearance has me in this situation. Bohemian hippy look with purple hair and dreads. Not to toot my own horn but I was raised to be polite and respect everybody, especially the elderly but everytime I try to hold a door open etc I just get greasy looks as though I have alterior motives. Heaven forbid I try to pick something up for an elderly person or female, I get looked at like I'm trying to steal it.

I don't look conventional but how many hippys have you heard of causing trouble of this nature??? Book, cover, judge.

I've grown used to it though. You have no hope of changing peoples opinions on you in a short period of time, just keep trying to change the stereotype to something positive.

I get most of my issues though from the 35-50 age group. The worst are the people who still can't figure out that at uncontrolled intersections you now give way TO YOUR RIGHT. IT ISN"T LEFT ANYMORE! Many times have I had somebody flip me off and on 1 occasion nearly collide after ploughing through an intersection with traffic lights out.

Try working in retail if you havn't and then we can have some awesome discussions about stupid and rude people

Everyone has reasons for why they are like 'themselves', their attitude and personalities are a direct result of having lived their life..maybe you just happened to run into 3 ppl having a bad day..either way i dont let stuff like that get to me thats just how they are..im sure if i lived their life it might be the same who knows.

    Calaber,

The right to be a grumpy old fart is the reward you get for living past retirement, you can't hold it against them. There has to be some kind of light at the tunnel or we'd all just top ourselves at 65.

Don't worry, another 20 years or so and you'll be enjoying things on the flip side of the coin Me? Well I'm still in my 20's, but I'm getting some early practice in

Yep. As I said I've grown used to it. If I held a grudge against every customer who irritated me or person who was rude I'd be one miserable and negative person.

Nup - I couldn't be as rude as these people to total strangers. They just don't seem to be able to see outside their own tiny little circles and woe betide anybody who enters that circle.

I reckon they must have very miserable, lonely existences because who the f*** would want to have anything to do with them?

I think part of it is because some of them are so old and not all quite there they just don't really know whats going on around them. A lot of them are half blind, half deaf, on 20 different prescriptions. They can be annoying, especially when you have kids out shopping even the not grumpy ones- the overly friendly ones that want to touch your baby or give you parenting advice Others are just rude ****ers lol

They don't bother me too much though, you get rude ignorant people of all ages , they just give me the shits when they get behind the wheel, its one thing to be ignorant and unaware of your surroundings at the shops but when they do it in a car just pulling out whenever and whereever they want its just really ****ing scary!

I'd much rather they hassle you in a shopping centre than try and navigate driving a motor vehicle.

The problem is they were taught respect, but only respect your elders. Obviously theres not alot of people left in that category

No, it was actually a couple of days before pension day, and the weather was fine. The full moon wasn't out the night before.....I dunno, they just seemed to have all decided to descend on the shopping centre at the same time and then cross paths with me.

The point was made that they were made to respect their elders and I think that's a valid point. Anybody younger should respect them in their minds and they will respect those older than themselves.

The problem is, I strongly believe that respect is earned, not an automatic entitlement that goes hand in hand with age. Some of those old people need a serious re-think about what level of respect they have earned, because they sure haven't earned any from me.

The other point, about not knowing half of what is going on around them and being doped up with multi-medications, is also valid. Imagine having to live with 20 plus different drugs a day.

I came to the conclusion these old arrogant pricks are just the young pricks I used to come across as a kid ,and the oldies I used to know as a kid who had morals and were kind are now gone and the generation after them is what we are seeing now

Even my 83 year old mate calls them arrogant whinging pricks

Agreed Slippy, once you've worked in retail you get some stories to tell!

my first job was working at maccas, terribly angry elderly people when their free "pensioner" coffee had to wait for a fresh batch to be brewed, or the machine was broken, and demanded cafe cappochinos as a replacement? wtf?

    rant

now i work for retravision, associated with the elderly as a place where they can get help, but when i've been to an old ladys place 6 times in 7 days (in my own time) to tell her ONCE AGAIN that she has to turn the TV ON for the set top box to work. im over it. i've written it down, shes written it down, i've laminated a huge a4 sheet and stuck it to the side of the tv, still i get phone calls. some are just ignorant of a younger persons advice or support. after telling her "ok, so turn the tv on first with the tv remote" response: "I DO THAT WHAT DO YOU THINK I AM STUPID?!?" thats enough

im happy to help anyone, any age, for any reason, it was how i was raised. but some people just abuse the privilidge of being old.

old lady pushed past me in the 12 items or less line the other day. she must have known i was there because she kind of gently elbowed me as she did it.
lucky she had a younger person with her so i took the opportunity to politely call her on it.
i probably wouldn't have done anything if shed been alone, i don't feel like being told off when all i want is to pay for dishwasher powder and leave.
glad i did tho, i think if people call rude people enough they'll get the message. same reason i get on the horn, if enough people call stupid/unsafe "wipe off 20" drivers, they might pick up their game

i had a good one when some old lady came through my checkout at the supermarket and she asked for $500 cash out, minutes after the store had opened, this is in a westfield also with 6 ATM's within 100m of the store, when i told her it was too early and cashiers didnt have any cash out yet she went off and said "i dont know why i even bloody shop here"

Because its a supermarket, not a ****in bank.

Actually, my wife works in a cafeteria at David Jones and often has stories to tell me of the sheer arrogance and rudeness of older females - old women do seem to be worse than old blokes. Obviously, as an employee, she has to grin and bear it.

I often have a coffee there. One day I'm hoping that I will be there when one of these old moles starts up. I'm going to walk over and give her a gobful, loudly, so that the whole cafe hears it, and try to embarrass her. As a customer, I can do that. Obviously, there will be no mention of my relationship with the missus - I'm just going to make out that
I'm an ordinary customer who thinks the old bat is a rude bitch and to stop treating the staff like shit and that if she has a problem, why doesn't she piss off and leave the staff alone?

it's simply the cycle of life. You start you bald, dependent and egocentric. You get better for a few good years, then you go back toward the bald, dependent and egocentric phase.
It's like picking on a baby because he/she shits him/herself. Can't help the cycle.

I've decided to retain the egocentricity. That way people won't be pissed at me when I'm old and can no longer help being a cranky prick.

I was once on a road where 2 lanes merged in to one, I was in the merging lane, in front of another car so I had right of way, put my indicator on, had it there for about 10 seconds, and this other car was JUST at my boot so I couldn't merge. I thought that they would let me in, the road was ending, no I was wrong soon enough I was driving all over some grass naturestrip at 60kh/h, slammed on the brakes, managed to get back on the road because someone else saw what happened and slowed right down. Now I had major road rage at this stage, slammed my horn on for at least a minute behind this old lady. NOT A SINGLE REACTION. Clearly didn't even know what was going on, probably didn't even know what day it was or what her name was either. Blind, deaf, unaware of her surroundings, AND ON THE ROAD.

Calaber i do hear you. I have been in that situation myself. I also was brought up to respect my elders and be polite, IT's also in my job description.

Not all are like that, But i have come across my share also. Last week i stopped to offer a elderly lady assistance. She was about 4 foot 5 40kg not much of her at all, And she was trying to lift 2 boxes of 24 cans. She was very grateful and added young people are not like that anymore. It's ok i was raised old style manners respect.
Then as i approached the counter and stuck my trolley in - an elderly lady screamed up from behind and almost tossed her basket out try like. Now we have counters just for smaller items, It's called express.

Happens all the time with elderly people, I'm a big guy and i always get elderly people barging past, I try to avoid them but sooner or later one is going to come off second best - And i would hate for that to happen.

Then walking to the car on the crossing i might ad, A car drove over and missed the trolley by 2mm (no tape), The gentlemen just covered his face and continued driving.

But in the end many are rude no matter the age.
