No engineers cert required....don't even think u have to tell them that you've done it.

Yeah you are right.. dumb question... LOL It is a conversion you are doing, not a modification. Either do it yourself or have it done by a gearbox specialist; either way all is good

    Read this.

    http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registrati...s_nov_2007.pdf

Basically, it is classed as a minor modification, so you can get away without a Engineer certificate but you need to notify the registration people.

actually its not that stupid because im restoring an old ute that i realised has been converted from a trimatic to a 4 speed manual when I ripped the floor out to find the floor has been hacked with a grinder to run the stick, so I was wondering the same thing.

Yes you have to notify the RTA, no you don't need an engineers certificate however they aren't that expencive and saves the hassle if the police start poking around looking for defects...

I had my old VP BT1 Auto converted to a 5 speed T5 gearbox and the gearbox/tailshaft and it HAD to be blueslipped and forwarded to the RTA. Any mechanic who can do blueslips can do this for you easily! It saves you hassles with the cops down the tracks! Prevention is better than cure I say!!

what about change of colour, is this via blueslip as well or something else?

My ute is regoed as purple, but when the panels are all replaced its being resprayed blue. I know the RTA record the colour and obviously if it says purple and i get stopped in a blue ute it causes issues, but how do I have that changed?

Shouldn't need that blue slipped, it should just be as simple as advising them it has changed colour, either way the VIN number is the same and is visible in the front windscreen so it should be easy!

Yep, that is correct... you just need to notify your states equivalant of VICROADS about the change. OTherwise you will be getting pulled over each time you get a random rego check.

The cops are a lot more relaxed here....we were driving around for years without changing engine numbers (we swapped motors over a fair bit) or telling the rego office about the manual conversions, and no cops said anything, even when we did get pulled over they never asked any questions.

When one car got a regency defect, we'd go buy a shell, swap EVERYTHING over and just register it and go. We made sure everything was legal tho, like one defect was coz of a seatbelt not retracting, so we obviously made sure it worked in the next car.

DANNY wouldn't it have been easier just to fix the seatbelt on the original car than to change everything to another car? Sounds like you have too much spare time!!!

It was a regency defect....works out cheaper finding another registerable shell rather then getting it put over the pits.

That was back in the day when me and my bro didn't work, so yeah we had heaps of time on our hands.....but now we both work.
