Im looking at buying a Nissan Patrol from north QLD. Only has 1 week of rego left, if i decide to buy it, i wont get there for 2 weeks. I need to get it back to Sydney, how does this all work with rego's, ctp's etc?
What sort of cost would i be looking at?
Or is it all to hard?
any help would be great!
look into getting a permit?

yeah permits are **** all to get. Ring ya local road ppl. as we'd call vic roads.
dont worry, il start a ride thread soon.
I think the premit in Qld is now $75/day or more.
They are only issued for point to point driving. The route has to be recoreded on the permit form. If you are found outside the designated route, you could be fined for unregistered.
As mentioned, check with vic roads. You might find it cheaper to get the permit in Vic before you leave.
Cheers, Col.
yeah permits are real easy to get. you dont even have to go into the rta office. you can call them and theyll fax you a permit. Or the other way is to get the current owner to pay 6mths rego then you can claim it back once you transfer rego.
you can get a permit to drive it from where it is now to a local mechanic, it will cost you $75 and there is also a ctp required to be payed for a days use, (a extra loverly government tax they like to sting you) can be anywhere from $50 to 100 for the day in ctp alone.
you are not able to drive a un-regisered vehicle in qld at all. just get the person who you purchaced it from to put 6 months rego on it. thats the easier option

unsure about states individual rules but you WILL need a permit for QLD and NSW if they issue them a similar way to vicroads. Once you cross a border the permit means nothing unless you have one for each state.
Maybe a strong vehicle and car trailer would be best.....
The car is fully registered and insured for all states, I drove a terratory from QLD to ACT over 2 days, and the only restrictions were driving during certain hours. All I did was go to QLD rego office with the former owner and buy the permit and also went to RACQ for the insurance (do this before you go to the rego office).
2 days later and all good and not one cop pulled me over (I had no numberplates either as the former owner cancelled the current rego)

So you are telling me a car with no rego in Qld is fully registered adn insured in all states? (assuming you mean with a permit issued in QLD?)
Better check that because i know a permit issued in vic is for vic only and permits issued out of vic are useless and void in vic.
I think paying rego would be best because at $75/day for a permit, is going to be a lot more than paying rego, North Queensland to Sydney is a few days at best.

It's not just registration, it's the compulsory third party insurance that is also at issue.
I am pretty certain that the only time you can drive an unregistered vehicle legally in NSW is when you are taking it to and from authorised inspection station and a motor registry for the purpose of registration. I don't believe that permits are issued in NSW - this state is notoriously tough with unregistered vehicles compared to most other states.
Issuing a "permit" only covers the legality of driving on the road whilst unregistered. It doesn't cover the insurance at all. I would imagine that if such a permit was issued in another State, there would be some sort of CTP insurance coverage required before the permit was issued.
Yeah if you were to get a permit you've gotta provide the transport dept and insurance people with make/model, year, VIN number, chassis number, engine number. I've had to get a few permits for my car, it cost around $60 for insurance and $20 something for the permit for one day for my SS. But thats in QLD... I'd be ringing up the relevant people to see exactly what to do to be on the safe side.
Ask around for a mates vehicle who can tow? Or if you have one that can tow? Then go down to a local place and hire a car carrier. They arn't that expensive from memory and usually work out cheaper. But dont quote me on that as i've never had to hire one myself. I just look to mates.
Well here is how it went down for me
Went to RACQ for insurance (3rd party), they have a special one for driving an unregistered car.
Went to Rego office, former owner transferred ownership to me as well as cancelling his rego (was easier doing it this way than transferring rego from state to state).
Got a permit for 2 days for the sole purpose of driving to canberra (is stated on permit) and the only limitation was couldn't drive during late night/early morning.
Drove terry without plates from QLD to Canberra staying overnight in Port Macquarie.
Got home no issues and car was fully registered/insured for whole trip

i apologise - it appears that if you use a QLD permit you can drive in any state bar WA, but the vic permits (from memory at least), say theirs is only good for Vic - but according to the QLD website this is also not true. Strange.
"When moving a vehicle from interstate to Queensland, an unregistered vehicle permit must be issued by the state or territory where the journey starts. A new permit must be obtained from the interstate authority if a vehicle has been moved from Queensland to another state and is being returned to Queensland. All states and territories (excluding Western Australia) have reciprocal arrangements so that a vehicle may travel through other states and territories with a Queensland-issued permit."
i wouldnt bother. coming from the top end of australia....... probably been put through sme hard times and heat.... unless it's fairly new and your getting it for cheap
Just get 3 months rego, drive it back, then cancel the rego and get a refund (which will be about 80% of what it costs.
$75 a day, or pay $200 (ish, thats what my V8 costs to register for 3 months) and then get 80% of that back when you get home.
