Try 2 keep a long story short...went 2 local tyre joint as i had a pretty major leak in back tyre (was putting bout 10psi in a day), so dropped my sv8 off 2 get it fixed. On returning i was told the devastating words...i have sum bad news (2 people in the world u don't want 2 hear that from is ur doctor or someone workin on ur car)! He told me its not ur tyre...its ur rim..its crackedUm ok i thought, we'll get a new rim i said...no can't get those rims anymore, ok, so i'm now up for 4 new 20in rims...bugger!!! In the meantime he suggested i take cracked rim 2 local steel place, they mite b able 2 weld it, did that, only 2 hear as soon as the heat touched the rim a hole would appear elsewhere! Ok, so tyre guy puts on my spare tyre (a 18in stocky). Was later told by someone else i'm actually wreaking my lsd by driving with 3 x 20ins (low profile tyres) & a 18in (high profile tyre) even just 4 the meantime.....any advice????!!!!!!
if the outer diametre of the wheels are different, yes you will eventualy stuff the lsd run the spare on a front and the front on the rear so each side on the rear is the same
it wont feel right with steering but itll save your diff
the easy solution would be to put two of the 20's on the rear, and put the 18 up front.
If your rolling diameter between your left and right rear wheels is different, then yes you will wear your LSD out prematturely.
EDIT: They beat me to it lol..... But by running your 18 and 20 upfront, you are going reduce your braking, it will most likely pull to one side, and wont handle t100%, could always run two stockies on the back? :P
Ok, so i need 2 initially buy another stocky 18 & tyre, then put them on the front, until i get my new rims?
using a 18 on one side of the front wont hurt it in any way besides handling
but yes you really need the same size wheels on the rear whatever they are
got a pic of the cracked rim?
Its still at the steel place, they're gunna have another go at welding it...pick it up 2moro. I didn't even know u could crack rims![]()
kitty when u come around to grab the fuel your more than welcome to grab the hsv spare also
oh and the local steel place is more than likely a bunch of blokes use to welding thick gauge material if they tack it correctly and seem weld it they shouldnt have a problem
the rim is alloy yes?
cheap brand is holden, if they are any good at tig welding they shouldnt have a problem
sumone has been going sideways, the air pocket will be making it the weak spot.
get another stocky and run 2 stockies on the back.
Ok, so 2 stocky's on the back....this won't wreck my lsd?
You need to have the exact same rolling diameter on the left and right hand side of the car.
It is possible to achieve this will different size rims, and compensating with tyre aspect ratios.
If you put stockies on the back, make sure they have the same size tyre and it wont wreck your LSD.
But its just temporary, been looking at new rims all evening....2 many 2 chose from...but am gunna stick with the 20's and they have 2 b black. Anyway, even with the 1 stocky on the back, the car sits a little crooked....but the guy at the tyre place assured me it is safe....as long as i don't do excessive burnouts or travel at excessive speeds...just 4 the mean time...and i'm not quite sure whether i believe him or not!!!
Depends on how long you intend to drive with different size wheels on the back. I personally would risk 1 week, but more.....up to you. As posted earlier if they are the same rolling diameter then it should be right, so 20's should be about XXX/30/20(?) while 18" should be XXX/40/18. If the rolling diametre is different you will be heating up that LSD real fast and wearing it down.
Never put different size tyres on the front, one tyre will grip harder than the other. For normal driving this shouldn't be to bad, a noticeable pull when braking, but imagine the consequences if in an emergency you engage ABS and you can't compensate for the pull fast enough? Not a good thought.

I only intend it 2 b temporary....but already people r telling me which rims 2 buy, the guy at the tyre place is willing 2 give me a deal...4 x 20's in black, very similar 2 the ones currently on my car 4 $350 ea....now would i b buying more problems....i.e more cracked rims bcoz they r a lot cheaper?
What brand are they? Warranty?

The brand is "Speedy", never heard of them myself
Just done some quick research, "Speedy Wheels" is an Australian brand. Come with a 50 year structural warranty, Speedy Wheels Australia alloy wheels, steel wheels & accessories . Hmm seems alright, ask the seller if any have ever come back?
