A YOUNG man caught burning rubber on a Darwin road in his father's ute is the first person to have their vehicle impounded under the Territory's new hoon laws.
Police said the 22-year-old driver left a 30m black mark on the bitumen when he took off from a set of traffic lights and "performed a burnout and fishtail with smoke coming from the tyres".
But unknown to him, an officer in an unmarked police car was travelling behind him ready to pounce.
He was pulled over immediately and police seized his father's green 2003 SS V8 Commodore ute.
The driver was also slapped with a $220 fine for "damaging the road surface".
The hoon, from Humpty Doo in Darwin's rural area, was nabbed at the intersection of Wishart and Berrimah roads in Berrimah about 4.15pm on Wednesday.
Territory Duty Superintendent Mike Murphy said the driver's actions were stupid and served as a warning to other hoons to "pull your socks up".
"We are clamping down on this sort of behaviour as too many people are injured or killed on our roads," he said.
The impounded car - with personalised number plates - can be picked up from police this afternoon.
But police said the owner of the ute would have to pay all towing and impoundment fees first.
The Northern Territory News understands the driver's dad is currently holidaying overseas.
Under the new legislation, police have the power to impound a car for 48 hours after the first hooning offence.

Never heard of someone dying from a burnout, unless they are including smoke inhalation but if thats the case then the owners of the broken down fords i see on the way to work will be up for some coin...

I'd have it as a guess, that holden and ford would be the most impounded(being the more popular car of choice for street drift kings). I think someone posted up stats a while ago that showed in Vic, Holden were well and truly in front?

There was an incedent at Harrys diner (Newmarket Rd Brisbane) a fews years ago Where a 66 corvette done a burn out and lost control ploughing into a group of bystanders ,badly injureing people and about six months after that it happened all over again at the same place this time it was a Hotrod ,so its come close to someone dying

If that was my dad, when I got home from work when he got home, all my stuff would be on the front lawn including me until he got his car back. probably have to put a new tank of gas in and new tyres as well for the sake of it....
