just wonder if there is any other dolies on here. just a simple question in regards to tax on newstart allounces.
When i was getting payments mid last year i was taxed only a small amount. but this year they have me marked down as paying no tax at all , for which they told me i would be paying tax on my benefits. Does anyone here pay tax on their dole payments?
I didn't think you could claim tax on government money / payments?

you can option to have tax taken out of your NS allowance etc, which is a nice little small sum at the end of the tax year. I would ring, or go see your nearest centrelink office, and discuss it with them.
It should also say, on your fornightly payment form, if you have any deductions taken out, then with your total amount payable to you
Smon
any centerlink money is regarded as income therefor you have to pay tax on it. Quite a few years back when i worked on and off i was on centerlink twice in a financial year. when i did my tax i had one group certificate from centerlink and 2 from my employers. Anyways i got a 1600 tax return yet centerlink didnt send me a group certificate for earl;ier in the year i assume it was all on the same one but no. Anyway i ended up owing $600 odd to the tax department when they found out later on (even though they approved my 1600 return. arent they supposed to check taX returns???)

they say when you dont pay tax on the dole you will have to pay a lump sum when you get a job but never happens to me im on and of it in and out of work and never paid them back a thing or the tax deppartment
i get youth allowance and i found the same problem, last yr i didnt think it was taxable but this year apparently it is, this is after 2 phone calls to both centrelink and the ATO, ive now made it they take 10% out every payment so even if i dont pay tax in the end, i have them working for me saving my money :P

I'm also on youth allowance (although i never actually receive any money lol) and i need to pay tax on that income, i asked centrelink to take out 10% of the allowance for tax.
but i don't even get any money from them now anyways lol, although im still on the list. It was either work 1 job, and get the payments, or work 2 jobs and get no payments. Although i get hardly any extra money from working 2 jobs i feel better about where my income is coming, i don't feel like i'm stealing other peoples money![]()
Im on a sickness benefit and I had the option to get my payments taxed, I chose not to because 250 a fortnight was ****all as it is.
Talking bout this I forgot to tell centre link I went back to work on thursday.
