I posted my old car up for sale on 'Aussie Car Forum' and was emailed by a potential buyer. I said the current price I was asking for my car was $3000 and I recieved this email in response:
"Hello jess, sorry for late responce we have concluded, making the payment
Thanks for your email and update on the bottom price($3,000),it was
accepted by my clientand he has directed us to issue payment to you. I
would need your assurance that the property whose payment we would start
processing,is in a good condition as the only view our client had of the
vehicle was on the internet and this purchase is hinged on his personal
judgement of what the property's state and output would be like,in
comparison to models of its category. However,he made out a certified
cashiers check of($7,000) before he travelled for a conference, for a
previous vehicle and its shipment charges etc,but it wasunfortunately
sold. The amount on the check he deposited for the vehicle is bigger than
what should be paid to you now, so the check is now meant for the total
expenses which includes the purchase of your vehicle ,its pick up from its
present location and the shipping charges/other necessary shipping
arrangements. However he has instructed us to bikery on with this
transaction. So when payment gets to you, you're required to deduct the
cost of your vehicle ($3,000) and send the balance of($4,000) to my client
shipping agent to enable him offsett shipping charges/arrangements. Once
the transaction is concluded, My client shipping agent will be coming for
the pick up of the vehicle from its present location, on an access to a
prepaid shipper for shipment, and also conclude other necessary shipping
arrangements. So you dont have to bother yourself about the pick up and
shipping rrangements, while title papers and other necessary documets will
be sent by you via fedex courier . Please Confirm this and provide (1)
NAME (2) CONTACT ADDRESS AND CONTACT PHONE NUMBER(s) for check payment to
be delivered to you via regular mail immediately , please remove the add
of the vehicle from the internet to avoid complications from other buyers"
Can anyone tell me what it means, and whether or not to accept this? Or if I should just stay away from it completely..
Thanks!
yep bugger that.......
thanks! thought it was a bit strange...
lol give him a couple of bogus names with addresses in Nigeria![]()
PERSONALLY, I would be a bit sketchy on this.
Basically what all that said was.
"The Cheque you will receive is to cover the cost of the car plus shipping costs. You need to forward the extra 4G to the shipping agent who will come and pick up the car from your place."
But trying to sound professional, and over complicating it.
Who is the "client" and who is sending this email?
I would be wanting to talk to the "client" over the phone aswell as the person who sent this email and the "shipping agent".
Seems like a SCAM of some sort to me.
Good luck with it.
Wow, the spelling and punctuation in that is worse than some of the school holiday posts i see here.
Scammers need to study their grammar, yo.
i was nearlly scammed on ebay once.... twice actually, never deal with anyone in nigeria or wanting the item to go to nigeria....
one guy from the UK (doubt he was from there) wanted to give me an extra $200 to send it to nigeria for his "brother". atfirst i was like hell yeah, but i then fund a few articles on ebay about nigerian scammers etc..
i reckon this is a scam...
how i read that was... WE give you 7k, you take 3k and gives us 4k.....
Do it.. how can you loose??? This will only work if they give you 7k straight up. Take the money and run dude... easy peasy.
aZk.
Take a copy of the email to the Police and see what they have to say about it. If it is a scam (as it appears) then it really should be reported.
It sounds awefully suspect and in my personal opinion, would be better off avoided. Take the ad off the internet and advertise it locally to avoid these scammers in the future

sell it legit and to someone who can come out and view the car and buy it based ona test drive/visual inspection. otherwise theres a mountain of things your leaving yourself open for
ask for cash only and a contact number, call if they sound dodgey when you question then bail. You should get 3k for your car anyway

I dont see how they can win this unless there is a really dodgy clause in the contract they plan to send out.
This is how they are working it so far:
They send him the cheque
He deposites the cheque and gets 7k
He is meant to deduct 3k (for the car) and then send the remainder to the company
They come and collect the car
The ONLY way they can rip him off at this point is if there is a clause in the contract which says "and you will owe them XXX dollars if you sign this" which is easy enough to pick out.
You show me how this can go sour? Re-read the email... no where does he/she loose out. He holds the car until payment is made and the contract signed.
Its proably a scam but by the looks of it, not a very good one. Contract law is very clear on what you can and cant do... i know, i've studied it! So they usually make these scams a matter of stupidity.. ie, give us the car and the cheque will arive within 10days, ie, you give them your car and never see the money. This email is all up front... id play it out and see where it goes..

LMFAO. Do it with your money/car then.
I can't believe the stupidity of some people thinking it could have a good outcome for them. Lets keep in mind, Australian law means sweet **** all in nigeria (because its obvious these people are in a different country)
Oh, and just for the record, theres 1000s of different scams. This is just the reverse of what they normally are. The op WILL end up without a car, and without money if she does 'play it out'. Theres also some going in the realestate game atm, but the realeastate sites are pretty hot on it.

Maybe its legit and just a coincidence that it sounds scammy...

lol I wasn't going to go ahead with it... Kinda figured it was a scam but coz I need money so badly I just thought I'd ask and see what everyone else said..
I've been trying to sell my car since Feb, and put posters up everywhere locally.. Didn't get a single call... That's why I was advertising on forums.. I can't put up an ad on carpoint etc either coz I don't have a credit card.
Any other ideas of how to sell a car?

BARP - Azk gets scammed! The cheque will (apparently) clear and in theory you refund the difference however down the track (several months) the cheque is found to be bogus (eft transactions can be spoofed in a similar way) and you are out of pocket whatever went out of your account. Stay away from it - it's bad news.
