Hey guys.
Planning on giving the engine in my little e30 a clean out this weekend.
I've been reading up of a few products and have basically decided that I want to run a Upper Engine Cleaner through it and also a "Fuel system and Injector" cleaner in the fuel tank.
Now this is a 1989 1.8 litre single cam engine with about 320 thou KM on it.
So i figure there is a fair build up of cr@ in there.
Has anyone done something limitare to their older engine? What are the good products to look out for?
Advice?
Thanks.
Yes when I get my cars I squirt some juice down there untill all the carbon blows out![]()
seafoam or holden upper cylinder cleaner is good basically just use one of your vacuam hoses to suck the stuff in then stall the engine with it in the end and leave it overnight then fire it up in the morning. gets rid of all the carbon.most of them contain brakefluid which eats carbon you can just use brake fluid in the same manor let the engine suck it in slowly for a few minutes via a vac line then give it a big mouthfull to stall the engine and let it sit to eat the carbon out we used to use brakefluid on 2 stroke boat engines too cleans them out good works great.

Yeah I've been reading up on the Seafoam. Though people have mentioned that it can cause issues with the O2 sensor?
Thanks
if you are to worried just rip the o2 sensor out for the job its pretty smokie and all the crap goes out the exhaust but its supposidly O2 sensor safe but if you have a new O2 ide probably take it out.its great shit thats why its been on the market for so many years half a can in the intake 1/4 in the oil 1/4 in the fuel tankwish i could still get cans of the stuff easy here ide use it all the time.but the holden stuff is meant to be pretty good too same sort of thing

Lol... the O2 sensor is about a million years old... cool. Thanks for the info.
Wonder if it's possible to get seafoam in OZ.
It's going to be a fun weekend!![]()
No no, the seafoam goes in via a vacum hose apparently and the intejtor stuff in the tank.
I just replaced my oil so that one is not on the "to do" list.
Subaru upper engine cleaner seems to work really well.
iv'e used the subaru/ford/bars leaks intake and combustion chamber cleaner. we use it at work a fair bit. its good stuff, and its easy to do. make sure you don't do it in your garage, can produce a heap of smoke.
i drained a couple of litres of oil in mine, and filled the rest up with kero. Ran it for 5 mins like this, then drained it all out. Filled with some more sump oil and ran for 5 mins again , and drained (to get all the kero out).
Then put new oil/filter in
i did it in the alloytec a couple of weeks ago, it didnt smoke or blow shit, so its a good sign there was no crap build up in the motor,
on the other hand, you do this on a subaru every service 12,500km, always blow huge ass chuffs of oil smoke, but the pistons do live in an oil bath so the suffer from gum build ups a fair bit,
a rear good one to get is made by '3 bond' its called upper cylinder cleaner, or upper engine cleaner, about $11 bucks a can and lasts for 3 cars

Quick question, I have been reading up about the Suburu upper engine cleaner and apparently it's basically seafoam. Is it a product available at any auto shop or just from suburu?
my brother used redex petrol or something like that on his old senator and it worked pretty well and it sure does let out a bit of smoke when you start the car back up.
here's a vid of it

I used it on 1 of my old engine's a while ago....... Seemed to work pretty good, the way i see it is for the $10 you now know its a shitload cleaner then before lol
You only get the subaru stuff from Subaru dealers i believe.
i worked for Subaru for 4 years and we did a test on a forester it was in for a service and we noticed the head gaskets were leaking so the heads had to come off so we run the combustion cleaner throw it as per service and booked it in to have the heads done a week later, when we the heads off the back side of the valves and combustion cambers were spotless. the best way to run it throw the motor is to get it hot and run it throw the throttle body it will need the revs held up a bit to keep it running, yes subaru sell it about $12 a can, wurth make a good one too water works as well in a spray bottle same idea and both will not harm o2 sensors
the way my bother did it was pull the spark plugs out and sprayed enough down each hole and let it sit for a bit then put the plugs back in and started the car, is it alright to do it that way? seemed to work pretty good.

all that will do is clean the top of the piston and exhaust valves not a lot, the main thing it helps with is the sealing of the valves if there is to much carbon build up on them not letting them seal correctly
you would want to hope he put a small amount of oil on the threads on the spark plugs when he put them back in as the cleaner will leave a residue on the treads, cleans the lube off and cause them to seal in there f#*ken tight i have hear of other dealers doing it that way on Subarus and the plugs on the later model ones are down in the head are they become that tight the thread strips out not fun to fix or tell the customer there car is in the shop for a few days cos the head needs to come off
Is there any downside to doing this regularly, like every 50,000kms or so? Is all the crap getting dislodged going to be abrasive in the combustion chamber? Foul spark plugs? Sensors? etc.
Is a well kept car going to benefit from this, or is it just pissing in the wind?

Either way, Mornington Suburu is getting a visit from me this weekend.
One more thing, some people are saying to add the stuff with the car running and run it till it stops smoking, and others are saying that I should add it. Shut the engine off, let it sit and then start it up and run it out.
Which is the best way for it?
Also, i know with the seafoam they say to use 2/3 in the intake and 1/3 in the fuel tank. Does suburu have a product to add to the fuel?
Bloke at bursons said to use some flash lube after to clean the injectors and give the internals a protective coating once they have been cleaned out by the suburu upper engine cleaner.
THis is gonna be a fun weekend.

run it while using a small hose plugged into the vacuam feed to the brake booster is the best keep dipping the end of the hose in and out of the fluid so the engine keeps running then when you have enough in there going off whats left in the container pull the little hose out the booster hose and shove the big end of the booster hose straight in the container to stall the engine then leave over night for best results it will eat all the carbon off parts over night and smoke like hell in the morning when it burns it away
