Ford Australia are expected to announce the cancellation of the Australian built Focus that was due to start in 2011. They will instead release 4 cyl and diesel versions of the Falcon and Territory range. No job losses are expected at either Broadmeadows or Geelong.

4 cylinder large sedans.. hmmm.. Holden tried that in the late 70's to early 80's. Povo pack and a backfire 4. Those were the days.. NOT.
Technology has advanced a wee bit since then....
Yes but it has also been proven that a 4 in a large car does not equal good fuel economy (4 banger toymota camary anyone). This move is just another bad one for Ford AUS, 1 step forward 3 steps back
Sorry forgot to add, diesel terratory is long overdue

Ford abandons Focus plan in favour of four-cylinder Falcon
Ford will abandon plans to build a new small car in Australia and instead produce a four-cylinder version of its existing Falcon range and a diesel Territory.
The car maker today confirmed a $230 million program to introduce three new, more environmentally friendly engines to its locally-built Falcon sedan and Territory offroader from 2010 onwards.
Apart from the diesel and four-cylinder engines, the company will also introduce a new, more technologically advanced version of its LPG engine.
Ford planned to build 40,000 Focuses a year in Australia, with 15,000 earmarked for export. It is believed the car will now be imported from Thailand, which has a free trade agreement with Australia.
The company claims the new turbo-charged four-cylinder petrol engine will deliver six-cylinder performance with the fuel consumption and emissions of a small car. It claims the four-cylinder will use 15 to 20 per cent less fuel than V6 alternatives.
The Eco-boost engine has been developed by its US parent, and Ford global product boss Derek Kuzak recently told media the company planned to have a four-cylinder engine in every car in its range by 2012. It will arrive in Australia in 2011.
The Falcon version is expected to have a power output almost equal to Holden's current V6 Commodore, while using about 8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, which is the same as the automatic version of the current Focus small car.

I struggle to believe those figures, however we will see.
Overall, I have to say, this is good news, especially since I remember hearing rumours a couple of years ago that Ford was looking to shitcan the Falcon. However, as others said, I can't imagine a big heavy Falcon with a 4 cylinder being very fast or economical....
The Prius is not cheap to buy, not cheap to make (carbon footprint kind of cheap), not cheap to run (servicing costs are astronomical), but that didn't stop them from making or selling it.
If they made a diesel 4 for the falcon it'd work but they'd have to make it light as.
We got rep back, yaaay!

^^^^^^^^^^ Near on 2 tonne ( par with VE ) they'd need it to weight 1500kg MAX or it'd be a slug that would chew as much fuel as a 6.

I am curious to see if all the Holden bashers who criticised Holden for getting cars from Korea, will now do the same to Ford for getting the Focus from Thailand. Or will they claim that Thailand make better cars than Korea?
Didn't Ford use rebadged Kia's as Festiva's in the past ?
It's usually just the hardcore supporters who will shitcan anything the other side does, it's like those that always seem to have 10,000 things go wrong when they buy a Holden/Ford (remove favourite brand) but they have had a Ford/Holden XXXX for years and the only thing that's broken on it is the AM switch on the radio
Hopefully job losses (if any) are minimal now the Focus plan is dead and the Falcon/Territory find export markets for the sake of keeping locals employed
If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people around ?
It actually might work, we all know little petrol motors and big fat arsed cars is a disaster waiting to happen, but a good turbo diesel is ideal to move a whale. But man it's will be spooling it's little heart out getting a Falcon to move from a standstill. Still the public missed out on the Focus, Australians just don't get it when it comes to cars like that. Ford AU aren't very good at making cars anyway, The Falcons still come with pre isntalled rust before you even pick one up so they probably would have made a mess of the Focus
edit - nevermind. i thought the focus wasnt going to be sold at all. it will be an import instead?

The Focus has allways been imported and will still be, not sure where it comes from at the moment, but it WAS from Germany originally I think at the moment they are from the South African plant. The Fiesta is switching from Germany to Thialand plant soon but I don't know if that Thialand plant will build Focus's as far as I know it will only build Fiestas and Mazda 2's (Ford and Mazda will share the factory since the cars share the same basic floorpan and suspension)
looks yuck!
