Comedians (about how tey start out..etc)

i was just wondering, do you think most "well known comedians" write their own material?
or have writers that do it for them??

i've just started working on a comic routine, and hopefully will one day have the balls to get up and perform at a comedy club for beginers or some shit.. dunno.... i think im most likely dreamin though...


would any of you guys ever give it a go??

I'd like to think that the 'well-known comedians' write their own stuff, it would kinda be a let down having a laugh at it and then thinking... hang on, someone else thought of that.

I personally am not the type to get up in front of a group of people and lay a joke out on the table... unless I'm super drunk and someone says karaoke. But I say go for it!! I love it how comedians mention something within a joke and they totally go off on a tangent and end up talking about something completely different.

I like Carl Barron... I think of him whenever I see someone doing a little rev when they drive past the pub or a group of girls... 'Oooooh he just accelerated!!'

I couldn't do it, my type of humour wouldn't work for standup.

What kind of material do you have? I guess you just have to find a local club/pub that does comedy nights, give it a whirl to a small audience, see how you go. If it's well received try and branch out to bigger and better things, when you get better and more confident send some dvds off.

yeah it'll be awhile before i get up infront of people yet, lol, and i know all comedians start off small like 5 mins up to 10mins,

I'd say, have a look a Louis Ck's website. He has some videos on there that show some of his best work and some of his worst. It gives you a good perception of what it can be like.

He also shows how he experiments with jokes and looks for ones that turn out to be funny, then he puts them in to his material.

Its worth a look.

As long as you are not going to be like this guy you'll have nothing to worry about when you're on stage.

Also best thing to do is to experience a big screw up on stage, after that you're not really going to care that much if you stuff up, since you have experienced the worst. (after Dave Chappelle was booed of stage in his early years, he became more confident about himself. He used to look down at his feet while telling jokes)
