Default National Driver Training Scheme, a FREE driving lesson for L, P1 holders.

    Home - keys2drive - 6 months on P's, zero harm

    # L1-P1

keys2drive is an Australia-wide education program for new drivers, their
supervisors, and driving instructors working together towards the goal of
zero harm in the first six months of P plate driving. It aims to make newly
    licensed driving much safer.
This item kicked off (December 15, 2004) as part of the then governments
plan for a "National Driver Training Scheme", which has developed to date,
into that which you see 'harmonsing' around each State and Territory as the
graduated L, P1 and P2 system, and its emphasis on the defensive driver
    components.

This is an attempt to remedy some of the poor driving habits parents pass on
to their their kids. Basically, a single free lesson for ALL learning/inexperienced
applicants across the country, it is hoped some will then take additional
    training.

This program is now running in TAS and will soon extend to other
    jurisdictions.

    J.

Not a bad idea I guess.. But where does the money come from? One single lesson may identify bad driving habits, but it's not going to fix them. I would think it would be better in the long run to further educate drivers on the dangers of two things; stupid behavior, and a lack of concentration.

1 free lesson is a start at least...it's probably not going to solve anything, but at least they are heading in the right direction

EDIT: Just clicked that OT link. I always carry a hi-vis vest in the car since I like to stop and help people if I see them broken down on the side of the road, or if I come across an accident I can at least alert other drivers more safely. I used to have one of those triangle things but I took it out at some point and haven't found it again

The NBN - TEXT mentions some suppliers, ensure the triangle is to UNECE 27R spec and NOT soley to AS3790 - they are garbage. RTA are re-working triangle placement legislation.
    http://www.nbntv.com.au/index.php/20...adside-safety/

Additional to that NBN TV text, Supercheap are on the way to stocking UNECE 27R triangles, won't be long now they advise. They are finishing their junky, non-conforming triangle item. Their new Euro triangle is the same unit they sell in their Roadside Assistance pack; it has fold-out plastic spidery legs with rubber feet, full Euro inner and outer triangle, is lightweight and folds into a very small plastic case.

Told Bunnings will offer or is, similar. I'll check.

    * NB - I have NO association with any supplier, road safety advocacy only.

Anyhow, the NEW SCHEME for learner/P1 holders is the nations first serious attempt at on-road tuition by CERTIFIED-IN-THE-SYSTEM driving instructors. it deserves full public support, if that happens, perhaps we can then expand it.

    Regards!

I agree that this free lesson thing needs to be supported. I don't know how many times I've said on here how much more training we need before getting our licenses, whether it's free or not.
It's just that one lesson isn't nearly enough to get everything through to the learners. Hopefully the instructers will be able to convince most people during that free lesson that they need to go back for more

    it's a start of sorts.

personally I think they need to make the test to get your P's a LOT harder. some of the people that manage to get a licence... just scares me.

oh, and you shouldn't be able to tranfer international licenses while on topic. there's a lot of people out there that have legitimately obtained their license overseas, yet have no clue how to drive and are just let loose on our roads...

Apparently almost 50% failed the test first time round after they made it stricter.

The old test was a joke anyway. My older brother hit the gutter and stalled while parking in front of the fire hydrant out the front of vicroads when he was finishing up his test but they still passed him

The Euro triangle thing works with available 'on-scene' flashing lights etc as whole of scene management. The triangle is placed *before* the scene to give *advance* warning of the incident ahead, on motorways - we are re-writing the legislation so the triangle is to be placed 200metres (steps) before the scene.

We push the triangle because sometimes hazard-warning lamps, revolving emergency flashers et al are sometimes knocked out by the crash, or cannot be seen over the crest of a hill, around a bend or curve, or can be masked in bright daylight conditions on the straight. Lessons we have gain from the German/Hungarian/Italian/French experience.

I expect the Euro/UN Spec triangle to eventually be a mandatory item for inclusion into new-market cars, vans, 4WD's sold in NSW for the purpose of achieving NSW registration, before becoming a national norm. NSW timeframe 2011-2012.

I expect same for the EN471 safety vests too:-
Le site de la Sécurité Routière - Le gilet et le triangle

3M UK & Ireland: Scotchlite? Reflective Material - The importance of being seen

One can buy a Euro/UN Spec EN471 vest in AUS for as little as $4.50!

Bear in mind, nearly all nations of the world have contracted, over the last decades, "the basic" rules of the road, done via The United Nations Conventions on Road Traffic, Road Signs & Signals.

Example of some basics where we are all uniform;-
Keeping left or right - depending on side-of-road; RHD/LHD in relation to two-lane roads.
Keeping left (or right) multi-lane, and that on a 3-lane motorway means left, not middle.
    Staying within lane.
Uniform head and taillight use, indicators.
    Licensing.
Rules relating to bus lanes, truck lanes, hatched intersections etc.
Uniform lane marking colour and markings per se.
Mutual recognition of licenses from one jurisdiction to another.
A three month period by which time a foreigner must obtain a domestic license.
    And so on -

Certainly some cultures adopt all the same rules, but drive chaotically by our standards - see heavy populations that do:-)

Yeah i heard something similar. One of my mates dragged a cop from the lights in his test, passed. Another bloke i know hit a bloody mailbox and passed. Me? I was perfect

The retest is a good idea in thoery... But I know i probably wouldn't pass right now, I can't remember all the little intricacies. I had maybe 8 lessons before my P's test, just so i knew the actual law backwards and forwards. Driving well just doesn't cut it, it's become bureaucratic. If you fart at the wrong moment you fail.

Also, a little rant. If you're in an accident in your test that's completely the other persons fault, Lets say you're pulled up at lights and you get rear ended. You fail instantly. No refund, no instant restart of test, just fail.
