Just following up on this, ended up buying a fishtank on ebay for $200.. picking it up saturday. Its 4.5ft and comes with stand, filter, heater and a pair of oscars. The filter is pretty crap tho, so I ended up getting my mates gear off of him for a carton of beer. Turns out he had an Eheim pro cannister filter, and heaps of other good quality bits and pieces.
Decided to sell the two oscars to an aquarium shop, as I wont have the tank set up for a while. I'm thinking of starting with those bright yellow and blue cicchlids, apparently they're meant to be pretty hardy.
Sounds like a good setup mate. Electric blue's and electric's yellows are amoung the hardiest of chichlids, also princess brechardi's are good. Just be careful though, because alot of chiclids will attack each other, and most will eat any other fish that can fit in their mouth haha.
here we go bezz wholesale fish from wagon wheel :P haha
imo start with something cheap thats hard to kill
eg convicts, they are fun small bread easy and if they arnt breading ull find it pretty easy to put others in with them.
Got the aquarium and set it up over the weekend. I've attached some pics below. Kinda bare at the moment, needs some rocks. I reckon it'll contrast well in front of the purple feature wall. The aquarium has a hood as well but it need slight modification for the pipes before i can fit it. Its about 150cm wide, 25cm deep (quite thin) and about 50cm or so high. I'm really happy with it!

i have a small male black axolotyl, with what looks like gold specks through his body, in a 34 ltr tank with a few plants, i keep getting an algae issue, anyone offer any help?
my old tank made the water green (really crappy filter) so after purchasing a new tank with a considerably better filter its slowly turning the same, the plants are also getting what looks like a brown/orange something on the leaves. i'll have to take a photo.
and yes, i do a 1/3 water change every week, just done the first partial water change i've only had the tank coming up to 2 weeks.
About the algae issue, the main factor for excessive algae growth is from to much light, weather it be sunlight or from your fish tank light. (try putting tank in dark room, closing blinds or even towel over tank). It is also other factors which can stimulate algae growth like overfeeding and even to many fish (gives algae heaps of nutrients to grow), but that not the problem as you only have one axolotyl.
Its not really an issue with filters, maybe unless the filter inst big enough for the size of your tank.
You also don't want to use them algae chemicals, their crap most of the time and really are not good for your plants, can sometimes kill them
I hate algae with a passion, used to work in an big Aquarium store and I cleaned the tanks after school. The shop had huge glass wall at the front of the store which lite the tanks up all day, the amount of algae was ridiculous ha ha while on the other hand, in one of the big salt water tanks he had a not so friendly lion fish which I had to maneuver around while cleaning the tank. He also had some of these reef puffer fish that really didn't like me, would ark up and attack your hand as soon as it hit the water.
