and yeah ive heard in Vic its cheaper in the country
try 2 cars at $600, prime mover at $7500 a year and b-double trailers at $1600 a year. And all the f**n bicycle rider dont pay a cent AND get their own lane built everywhere with reg money.
2 cars is a choice. Trucks would be a tax writeoff and nothing stops you riding a bike.
I'd bet most people who ride a bike to work, like me, pay for a car rego as well so on the days i'm on the bike i'm not driving the car and still paying the same amount. Get over it?!? lol
As far as "our own lane".... it'd only be our own lane if drivers didn't spend most of their time on it. The number of times i've nearly been collected because drivers don't bother to look (particularly when opening their door....) is amazing.
Yeh, touchy subject which I don't think is taking the thread over for, tax write off or not, that's still $200 a week you gotta come up with. Bicycles, I not even gonna touch that one, especially driving up and down Beach Rd 4 times a day. Build a bigger shared footpath, bicycle vs pedestrian is a hell of a lot safer than semi vs bicycle. Have you tried to go aroung bends in a 2.5m wide 70 ft truck in a 2.7m lane with bikes every corner.
It can be quite handy having the 6 month option for rego, we have it in nswWhilst we can afford the rego for 12 months we only paid for 6 months rego last time because it suited us better. Rego was due on 31st Dec which was a pain in the arse of a time near the holidays when its so busy and we are usually broke after xmas lol. So easy solution was to pay for 6 months and worry about it in June every year instead.
I think every state should have the option to pay for 6 months maybe even 3, it might stop some of the scumbags driving around in unregoed uninsured cars if they didn't have such a big lump sum to pay once a year.
In the scheme of things, as much as I dislike Labor, Victoria are one of the better off states thanks to Kennett and Bracks. I'd much rather the leaders we have and have had than any other state.
Well said, I love having bike lanes, free transport, keeps you fit, relaxing, what more can you want? I think its safe to say majority of riders would pay a car rego to cover the bike lanes. On this though, i'd love to see rego plate on bicycles...even if only to report the bad riders.

If you rate this government highly compared to the other states I fear for all of us. Several years ago mr Bracks linked each and every state charge, fine, levey and tax to the cpi. It goes up yearly by whatever the inflation rate is. He conveniently didn't however link any thresholds, rebates or outflows of money.
This is a state government that bought 30 something new trains for our metropolitan rail network which would be fantastic except it can't run on 2/3 of the network. These trains will at best cover most of the current rail demand and do nothing to cater for expected future growth. Victoria had more trains in 1931 than we do now. Same problem with the VLine fleet. Don't get me started on the "very fast train" to our regeonal centres.
More evidence of their excellent management skills? Just look at the westgate freeway upgrade. Complete and utter disaster. Water policy?? Well they refused to sign the national water policy when the liberals proposed it but signed exactly the same document a few months later when Rudd got in - sorry - I object to playing politics against our interests. On the other hand, they sat on their hands for 10 years letting our water situation get to crisis point before doing anything.
Road tolls - they fought an election with a very clear and un-ambiguous policy - the new eastlink freeway would have no tolls. Less than 1 month after the election they suddenly realised they couldn't afford to build it un-tolled. Hmmm - either they were lying before the election or they didn't know. Either option is very troubling for the managers of our state.
Probably the best monument to our current state government is the giant wheel thing in Docklands - opened with great fanfare and expense last christmas only to be dismantled 2 weeks later coz it was broken - flawed design from the start.
If NSW and QLD governments are worse than ours (and from what I have seen they are), god help you!

What pees me off is that the rego in vic is automatically indexed to rise every year so that we could be paying up to $1000 dollars in 5 years time just to have our cars on the road.
What a rip off.
I didn't know that, What happens if the inflation rate hits 10% as we come out of recession for a couple of years?. Will we be better off than we were 3 years ago.... nope will the rego be 20+% more yep.... that doesn't add up very fair :P
