Probably not leaving yourself enough time buddy. Slow down a bit.
hey guys, I had a look at a vx ss on the weekend and want to buy it this weekend. i have never bought a car before, so my question is, the car is 100km out of canberra, and i want to pick it up on sunday. its regested in nsw till november. in canberra you just have to sign the rego papers and then hand them in within 2 weeks, and all done, is it the same in nsw? when i sign the nsw papers will i have to go somewhere in nsw to hand them in? Sorry i have no idea how all this works.
And also, i dont want to drive a $13 000 car back to canberra without insurance, so how would i go about getting insurance on a car that i just bought? one more question, is it possible to call nrma machanics or someone to come around the guys house where im buying the car, to have a proper look at it before i hand over the money? Just to make sure its got no major probs.
cheers

I have been looking since december last year thats enough time haha. I have the money and finally found a car, so now just need to know how insurance and rego works. And dont want the car to be taken by someone else. vx ss manuals are pretty hard to find

ring your insurance agency and do the policy over the phone, they will sort it then and there, and then you have 20 days to pay for it once the paperowrk comes through the mail..... or get the details of the car, go to your insurance mob on the friday, say your buying the car and say you want a policy... etc
just make sure you get a letter stating your details, his details, full price of sale, car is sold with all faults etc etc, make sure you get it signed there is no finance on the car, \
take that letter, as well as the rego papers, and pinkslip to the registry office and pay for the stamp duty and transfer fees, swap plates to act ones etc etc

Well for insurance you can get a cover letter dor your insurance company, don't rish into buying it mate take it for a test drive, try to be objective about it take a mate who's a mechanic or who know a bit about cars, cars look great on paper they're not always as good in the flesh.

Yeah i took it for a half hour drive last weekend. felt heaps good. But thats compaired to my vn haha. No noises or anything. I took my dad along who a spray painter/panel beater, so he checked out if its ever been in a smash or anything, and was all clear. Interior was spot less. didnt seem like there was any oil leaks or anythin. But still wanted to get a machanic to look over it, was just not sure whether that can happen on a sunday since thats the only day i can get it.

As soop said, slow down a little.
Insurance is as simple as a cover letter over the phone. You have to have all the car details ready though.
You might not be able to organise an inspection in time for Sunday. When I last looked at buying a car, there was like a 4 day wait until someone was available to go to the house for the inspection.
When I bought my first car I asked the owner to take it to the local mechanic for an inspection as the car was 200km from where I was, and hoped like hell that he didn't know the guy and pulled a shifty. It all turned out good in the end anyway.
Not sure if this would work for you. But when I was buying a car I organised it with the owner to take it to my mechanic for him to look over it before buying it.
I left the owner a deposit and wrote up quick contract saying that I was going to buy the car with the condition my mechanic said it was all good mechanically.
And when I was selling my old VX, the buyer organiser a RACV guy to come out, inspect it and test drive it.
One other thing is doing a details check on the car. I know in VIC it's like 19 bux and you get full details on the car, if finance is owing, if its been written of, VIN numbers, etc.
Hope that helps.
Yeah. SLOW DOWN lol.
There is a place called stateroads that will do pre-purchase inspections on used vehicles.
I have used them a few times and they are well worth the money. Average price is about $200.
They will do an 8 page report on the vehicle covering all aspects - exterior, interior, mechanical.
