Car Rego Question

A friend of mine was involved in a car accident a couple of months ago and she has received rego papers for the car that was supposedly maybe written off. She wants to know because she has received the papers is it able to be registered even though it only had a bit of rear end damage and the insurance was not wanting to fix it so they paid her out. It says it is her final notice, so does mean it is not written off.

the insurance company should have cancelled the rego when they wrote the car off.
she should go to the transport department and cancel it

It sounds like the car could be registered again if she got it repaired, or go and cancel it as gopher said and sell it for parts or something. But make sure you take off the number plates and hand them in before you wreck it or let anyone take it.

If she was payed out by the others insurance company then the car is not written off.Here is a factual story.1993 Rodeo rear ended with bent frame,other partys insurance company paid out for the rodeo.The Rodeo was never de registered and the car was repaired and resold with no mark against it name.

As ADO has said, the car is not written off if the other insurer pays out - it will only be written off if YOUR insurer pays out on that car.

what about the plates in the bay?

Compliance plates dont get removed just because a car is a write off.
You can even own and register a car from scratch even if it doesnt have compliance plates (older than 15 years is easier).
Again, compliance plates have nothing to do with anything.

My vp was written off ie stolen & burnt & we got the rego papers a few months later ignored it then got a letter informing me that I had to give plates back or register.I rang up and said cars burnt end of story

i brought a vs wagon and when i went to get rego they told me it was written off but becouse it is pre 2001 dont have to go through all the enginerrs cert or any thing like that vic roads just have alook and said yea good enogh
oh but that is in vic
