    Default Elderly restrictions (lack of)

I just had an encounter of the accident kind, an elderly lady (85) driving a mercedes merged into me halfway through a round about minimal damage nothing a few bumper screws and sum cut and polish wont fix. This old duck merged in on me while halfway thru a round about (cut thru the roundabout{mergerd from left to right lane})no indicator or anything,i quote "sorry luv i didnt see you there",i asked her for her insurance details and her rego number (rego number out of curiosity as to her vision),her husband dug throught the glove box got the insurance details out, meanwhile i asked the elderly lady to read me her number plate i quote "i cant read that sorry luv its to small" . my point here is there s all this restriction on p platers but F*** all on elderly people, i actually believe that this women did not see my car at all,i also believe that elderly people like this should not be driving full stop, she had just pulled off the highway what if i was a truck she would be dead

my dads car got written off yesterday, he was parked on the corner outfront of his house on a major road (70 zone) its probably a 20 degree corner, not blind a simple easy few mm movement of the steering wheel and this guy just went straight and plowed into the row of parked cars

You won't get any arguments from me on this one, elderly drivers are menaces on the road. I've far more close encounters with old farts than p platers!

Yep old people are the worst, they are either crazy, and will drive anywhere without looking..

Or they will drive 20km's under the limit, and slow down 1km before their turn lol.

its not discrimination she was an elderly driver this is not the first time i have encountered this type of thing a mate of mine was killed in sydney recently on a HARLEY with SCREAMING EAGLE pipes on it, yes by an elderly person she claims she did not see or hear him so she went thru a giveway sign, loss of a talented life because of driver incompetence if anyone has heard a new fat boy with screaming eagles on them they will know of the volume of the pipes can be heard 5 blocks away but she did not hear him 20 meters away how could she hear a siren, the worst thing is this lady still holds a current unrestricted drivers license

they havent caused any accidents for me as of yet, but ill just list todays issues...
going 30 under the speed limit in an 80 zone is not ok, even if you are in the left lane... its just plain not safe...
this one really got under my skin... 40kmh on a freeway on ramp trying to merge into moderate traffic moving at 100kmh. the truck to the right had to slam on his breaks as the guy pulled in front of him.
and its not as if he couldn't get upto speed time, he had well over a km to get upto speed and he wasnt driving a that was low on power, ford falcon drivers...

I completely agree, far far more near misses with elderly people. Young p-platers just seem to cut you off or not leave enough room, elderly just turn into you.

i totally agree, before i was old enough to get my Ps i often found myself in the passengers seat of my grandmothers nissan pulsar....... i would sit as low as i could(because it was so embarrasing) on the seat and hold on to anything i could for good reason. she had a bad neck...this meant not ever checking blind spots. which ment lots of tooting horns, which she could hardly hear, then when a p plater or a non p plater shot round her becasue she was doing 60 in the fast lane in an 80 zone, then as they did she would tell me how they are hoodlems and hooligans and dont know how to drive.........anyways, this always endud up in an argument with me saying that younger people are alot more aware of their surroundings in a car than elderly. she thought i was rong based on the fact she thought she had more experience.......She is the scariest person i have ever been in a with...

I remember not long ago, an elderly lady came in to get work done on her car. She was completely deaf to the point we had to write what we wanted to say on paper so she could read it. Its no offence to her or anything but it COULD be dangerous, not hearing sirens or car horns or anything. But i guess its not as bad as not being able to read or see properly. Then you know its time to hand in the ol' license

    Unrelated question:
Why are those pipes allowed, but the pigs used to get on my back for the exhaust on my VT despite it not even being 1/10th as loud?

Older drivers are self restricting, they loose their confidance and drive 80 everywhere, it's the little shits in Orange VN's that do 120 everywhere you have to worry about . If you lived to 80 obviously you never had a big crash so that says something

Self-restricting is a bit of a joke, hell everyone already thinks they are the best drivers, why would that attitude change when thier older.

Well the same could be said about said young people in thier orange VN's, thier still alive too. And being alive doesn't mean you haven't had a big crash, I've seen picture where a car has rolled, hit a pole, split in two, and driver managed to walk away.

The driveway into my work has a fair bit of incline for about 2 metres, about 30 degress of angle, enough for my VX with clubbie kit to need to take a bit of angle. There is this one old lady who drives a VT supercharged Calais, and she always takes the driveway at about 30-40km/h and every time her car bottoms out, badly, no bodykit or anything.

Well I feel more likely to be hit hard by the orange VN than the old granny. I can more easily avoid a slow moving granny than a sideways VN, but that's just my opinion

Standard colour VN's don't suffer from the same kind of driver . Shiny paint is a penile extender much like driving fast :P

ooopppsss opened up a can of worms on this one.
The son came over to abuse ME for driving like an idiot.
The roundabout in question turns off the pacific highway into raymond terrace it has a 70 speed limit from memory with a low degree of turn , i was doing about 40 with headlights and foglights on (i turned them on when i saw her swerve hoping to catch her attention) she was doing roughly the same speed, but i was in the wrong cause im the P plater and shes the experianced one. if i was driving a b double (which constantly use this highway and sit on the speed limit through this round about) she would easily be dead and i would be the one in the wrong in the face of the public.
The son came and abused me because i was a "HOON" and i cause damage to her mercedes, about $80 000 worth of mercedes. there was more damage to my car which i fixed myself this morning. for once the police used comon sense and escorted him from the premises trying to explain i wasnt the one in the wrong

Hang on..so doing 120 is more dangerous then driving with your eyes closed?

That is effectively how these old farts drive...I'd prefer sideways hoons over people who CANNOT SEE ME. Just because they haven't had a big crash, does not say they havent caused one. I know exactly where the OP is coming from, I had a stupid old bitch pull out in front of me in a 100 zone. Only problem is, she pulled out while I was around 50 metres away. Had I been in any other car without exceptional brakes, I would be dead. When I caught up to her she told me she did not see me... how the **** do you miss a car at night with high beam lights on?

Seriously foam, if you cannot see the dangers of old farts on the road...

When will the gov wake up to the fact that this is a real problem, i mean eyesight test once a year with renewal of license isnt enough i believe that anyone over 60 should have to do the HPT(hazard perception test ). i think the problem is gov officials are all in this age bracket and all drive like this(the ones that do drive). i quote police officer "I wish there was something we could do about this as this lady clearly shouldnt be driving" is there something the police could have done, not to familiar with this side of NSW law.
