Thought id start a thread with the dodgiest things you've done when selling a car, or the dodgiest stories you've heard of people selling cars.
Ill start off with a family friend of mine who had a 04 caprice with 390,000km's on it, coz its a VHA car (sedan limo), and got the clock run back to 180,000km and then sold it to a cop for $19,000. Car was sold April 09.
Any great stories...let's hear them!

Fat people are hard to kidnap!!!!!!!
That wasn't exactly the smartest move was it?
he has done it to a few cars, he said there is more to it than just changing the cluster clock!!! Never been caught before, but this was the first cop, time will tell i guess.

Why try and do a bodgy on a car when selling it or lying about stuff. It will only come back to bite you on the arse. I hope somebody does that to a car you buy.....
About the worst thing i did was use some polish to remove some rust stains around the windscreen in my old vl when it was for sale.
My gf's old hyundai had a dodgy alternator (1k+ to repair, mainly labour), dodgy aircon switch that only worked on max (could only get complete unit.. $600) and a few other problems. The night before we traded it in I charged the battery up, gave the car a polish and made it look perfect. Next day it was running nicely, and when testing the aircon the dealer only switched it to max. Ended up getting a nice trade in price for it
We saw it about 6 months later on the side of the road with a for sale sign on it, guessing the dealers did a bit of a dodgy of their own when selling to new owners.
Friend of mine bought a car with a drivers seat that rocked backwards and forwards... Believed them when she was told it was roadworthy.
Someone tried to sell me a car with a snapped off gearstick, and a metal rod duct taped in place. Didn't look sus at all.
This isn't dodgy as such, just strange. Another mate of mine bought a VR exec... Exhaust manifold was buggered, seller offered to repair it, turns out it was cheaper to get second hand 2.5" extractors than a new manifold... SO now he has 2.5" extractors piped into a 1 1/4" cat back. Sounds mint![]()
A mate of mine traded his BA XR8 ute with a clutch that only had about 1000 kays left on it. I guess that's what you get when you trade a car to a dealer that doesn't test drive a car before the value it.
lol, i forgot, when i traded the vy berlina after we had it repaired we were told by several car yards that it's worth less because it's been smashed etc, which was fine because i was expecting it. When we found the ss the yard it was at were getting desperate for my buisness cause i was playing a bit of hardball on the price. They called me up and we went for a look and i told them to check out my vy before we finalise the deal (i told them it'd been crashed and repaired) but the salesman said nah i checked it the other day and it looked like new no worries. So we did the deal and about 1 week later he rang me to see how the ss was going and to find out where the vy was repaired because the dealer principal was having a sook about the job they did on it. I lol'd and told him why do you think i wanted to sell it??
I wonder how many cars have been traded in with the chemiweld magic fix...lol
"If you're going through hell, keep going"
I tried to sell my car listing out everything wrong. being honest. It didnt sell. I guess all people want to hear it.
"Its just been serviced"
"The engine was rebuilt 1000k's ago"
"Its serviced 5000k's all the time"
"Its got a police chip in it"
47 made with the 185i engine $62,500 new
35 made with the 215i engine $73,500 new
i don't do dodgy shit...
I sold a car with a bent chassis, it has been run over a traffic island at 70km/hr and bent the front subframe..
I told the buyer this, it was pretty obvious anyway, wheel wasn't in the right place, and the panels didn't line up.
a month later he was selling it for twice what he paid for it!!! claiming it was perfectly straight...
it didn't sell... haha
Traded my VP Calais for my Statesman to a car yard and he thought he was the man cause he offered me $2850 but the joke was on him
-brake discs front and rear
-rust under the rear window seal
-fade paint that i buffed the day before
-power steering pump and rack
-air con only worked when it wanted
-i paid bugger all the year before and had done 40,000klm's in one year
then he put it in the yard for $7999 it sat there for a good six months when he sold it with no reg and took the wheels off for a VT.
Ah i love getting one back for once!!!!!!!![]()

Yes I know, if you get anymore manly you are in danger of making yourself pregnant!
I don't really hide things on any car i sell, but if a buyer doesn't ask stuff like 'has it been in a smash' then I'm not one to just give up the info... Sold a car that had been almost written off thats about the worst haha
My 4.2L Turbo VT V6 - http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/...vt-vteazn.html
I was once looking at a vx s that was ruined, which he insisted in his advertisement and over the phone that it was in mint condition, had never been trashed, it was running perfect and that he rarely drove it due to having a work van.
The fact was the car had bold rear tyres, scratches and small dents everywhere (that he avoided in the photos), a 2.5 inch exhaust, the gearbox definitely felt like it was going and when we asked if it had any engine mods he admitted he just removed a turbo from it.
He also had both his garage doors open, and no work van in sight. Not sure about that one
Now it seemed a little fishy, left that buy alone.
Good luck selling it with that false advertisement.
Its probably common but thats the worst I have experienced.
the most dodgy thing i have done is semi wash (high pressure hose no rubbing no soap) the car so the little bit of dirt takes away any attention from the odd scratch or ding to make the buyer think when its washed itl be premium.
as for trying to hide anything mechanically wrong with the car what you see is what you get masking an issue to make a sale is wrong just leave it broken for them to see but dont necessarily point it out
worst ive had was i went to look at a vt s-pac 120,000kms advertised as perfect no problems etc, got there and had a look body looked good, but when he moved the car there was just a pool of oil, had a look under the bonnet and we reckon the front, rear engine seal was gone and both power steering arms. there was just oil everywhere, he claims he had no idea and has only ever topped up the power steering fluid every now and then. you could clearly see it had been leaking for a good while
Ive always been over honest when selling anything, obviously some people dont like it, caus there like if thats what hes telling us, whats he hiding. But meh I have nothing to hide, Im a happy seller if the buyer is happy with what they are getting.
With the VK I told them every little detail, Im sure they were sick of my voice in the end, but atleast they cant come back and say I didnt tell them something, and they know exactly what needs fixing, or what has already been fixed.
Yeah, i'm the same.Ive always been over honest when selling anything,
Although i have seen some dodgey stuff. Like the XA coupe which had a chassis made from tar & cardboard.
I had an old Wherret sigma years ago. I will confess to putting a fresh bottle of nulon in the oil to quieten the timing chain noise down. But that was a regular thing.
