    Default Your view on corrections

Hey guys, im studying justice at the moment and one of the subjects im currently studying is corrections. For this subject im writing up a report on the publics view on corrections and how media influence those attitudes. So i just thought i'd see what your opinions are of corrections, including sentence lengths, conditions of prisons, treatment of prisoners and what ever else you can think of. This can be australia or worldwide.
    Thanks for your help guys.

    Sentencing is a joke.
one day someone gets 5years jail for (insert charge) and the next day someone is getting let off.
dont worry, il start a ride thread soon.

Corrections in whole is a joke. Why the **** do they live in such decent facilities with Internet, TV, tennis, swimming access etc?

They should be put into an empty paddock with a large fence around it with no luxuries at all. trees can be used for shelter, food throw over the fence. If they kill each other big deal.

Don't even get me started on sentencing...

I do agree with this, however, imagine if that what it was like, could you see anyone who went in for a couple of years coming out rehabilitated, not at all, they would come out like feral animals ready to take on the world in a negative way, not by any means I am proud to say, but I have a few mates who went off the rails and ended up inside, admitedely they came out with goals of better things (well most did, some people you just can't help). All of them did admit that the prison is a school of crime, some of the things would probably be too much to post here, but they surely wouldn't lie about it and spun me out. I assure you from these stories, its not a playhouse, its dog eat dog. Its just another form of rehabilitating, what do we do with junkies, alco's, gamblers and the rest, just say screw them?

Sentencing, well as minux said, don't start on this, peadophiles, rapists and similar getting off with a 3 year or altogether, thats where the system falls down. Every dog has his day, these guys are usually the first!

thanks for that shifty, good to hear some other views. good to hear that your mates have got goals after coming outta there too, which is uncommon as the re-offending rate is 80% which says that prisons aren't doing their job of rehabilitating.

Yeah, thanks, I can tell you for sure, its not all roses getting out either, they have the biggest dramas getting jobs, once people know their history they look down on them, but in saying that, some people are narrow-minded and may have reasons from their own experiences to look down on them, they also realise that too. Two of the guys in particular are my closest mates, and they are also on this forum and normal commo lovers, just to speak to them I can garantee nobody would know who. Don't get a big head ?? and ??.

i dont think its the jails that are the problem. yes they do get a it good inside but it is supposed to be rehab. but i think its the sentencing that is the biggest problem.

you can murder someone and get less time than someone who is in for fraud. there is no balance.

it all depends on what mood the judge is in on the day and which judge you get.

I guess many might think before becoming a low life criminal then if it is that hard. Currently many do not care if they get caught because they get **** all punishment, perhaps if there was a setup that made people think before breaking the law(serious enough to go to jail) they might think twice. I doubt it though, most criminals that go to jail are ****ed int he head anyway and rarely do think.

i just finished a 8 month suspended sentence with a 8 month ico (intenseve corections order) and the others boys who did the exact same as me got a slap on wrist and there got worse records then me so that just shows there is no set sentences for what ever you do and prison is meant to rehab you to improve your attitude towards scicoity but 90% of prisoners end up back in side as it is free to live in there no work play game consoles and watch pay tv internet if i went in side i would see it as a punishment not a holiday not use anything as that is how it should be

In relation to sentencing recently on the news they were saying there should be mandatory jail time for anyone who assults a copper, why only coppers? Why not anyone who assults someone gets jail time?

Because a copper got his face broken and anyone else getting beaten up isn't a big enough deal to the media. Give it 2 days and it will be forgotten about.

i think people who intentionally commit murder should be met with murder, They take a life they dont deserve to have one. I also think small crimes like graffiti should be atleast 3 months inside rather than a slap and a "dont do it again speech"

I personally don't think that you should take someones life because they killed someone. Then you are not better than the guy who killed.

Either way that's the easy way out for them, they should at least have a miserable life as a punishment instead of ending it that easily.

I disagree, why should our tax dollars go to housing these criminals in near luxury? It is a waste of money that could be spent on bettering the community.

That is true, that's why the people in prison should work to pay for the costs of running the jail. (making socks or something like that)

Also it comes down to this. A guy kills someones wife. The husband of the wife who was killed decides to kill the person responsible. Now, should the husband be punished or should he be killed as well?

I simply think that jail should be horrible and boring. not quite to the extent of those crazy texas ones, but currently they're living better in there than many australians below the poverty line.
What kind of punishment is that, commit a crime, to have all of your daily woes (food, shelter,tv,internet, education) looked after?

The people in jail should grow their own food, have no TV (forget internet altogether) but you should have education. Without education they are not going to be any better for after they serve their sentence.

    Bring back capital Punishment.

Get rid of all the perks of jail. No TV, no swimming, No internet, just a bare cell...People are in there to be punished not to have a f*cking holiday.

3 months for graffiti is ridiculous. I'm not a vandal, ie graffiti, but that's ridiculous. I'm not sure on the specifics of what it costs to keep a prisoner but I'm sure its not cheap, so your turning a minor crime into something that costs a lot of money. And most of the people who graffiti are 14 year old kids who simply need a kick in the ass to send them in the right direction. Most of these people aren't criminals in the sense of the word.

Repeat offenders is different, then by all means harsher punishment is required.

With your views on murder, as others have said, what if a husband kills his wifes killer? put yourself in their shoes and think of your reaction. I agree to the death sentence if the murder was committed in cold blood, like a robbery/mugging/etc and there was clear cut intention to kill, and it could be proven 100% with absolutely no doubt, not just a jury being convinced by circumstantial evidence. If there was several reputable witness' or video evidence that sort of thing, I would agree to the death sentence.

If the murder is a crime of passion, in the spur of the moment, I don't think that the death sentence is warranted.

On topic though, I agree that jails are to comfortable. To many creature comforts and privileges, like others said it is a punishment not a holiday.

atleast 3 months community service cleaning graffiti then. if they miss a day they hit the slammer.

Death sentence for murder would be more like pre meditated murder
