Oh man, i have been in your position.... through some unfortunate events in 2005 i lost my license for 2 years and i rode a pushbike for work everyday for those 2 years to keep my job...some days were 20 plus k's a day throughout the weeks riding between shifts .... it took quite a bit of focus too keep that up but i did.
I bought a GIANT Mountain bike with disc brakes front and rear, with 18 gears for the job .... it served me well, so that is my suggestion of a bike for you...
I can say that i have not been back on that bike since i got my liscence back 1 year and 4 months ago ... i also no longer have skinny chicken legs
Hope you hav'nt lost your liscence for too long .... All the best with it all.
I'm in a similar position. I'm moving to an apartment closer to work, prob 5km. And I'm looking for a bike to ride to work..
I'd definitely recommend a GIANT. Most likely what I'll be getting. I've got a mate with this one, and it's very enjoyable to ride.

What's your price range? A good bike is bloody expensive : (
WTB: VZ Chasers
Mate like the other guys I would also say buy a Giant. I have a Giant Thermo, and ride a Giant for work. They are a good tuff bike and can take a bit of a beating. You will be looking between $600-$1000 for one. Most models will have a disc brake upgrade for a little extra.
hey mate my old man owns cumberland cycles on goodwood road. he has a wide range of quality bikes in stock. he mostly stocks diamond backs but has other good brands too. definatly get what you pay for with bikes so dont go buying from a department store or something.
I got a gaint stp1 when I was in your situation then only thing that killed me was it has 8 gears and most of my ride to work was up hill
heres what i ended up with another Specialized Downhill Hardrock sport disc stands out like dogs balls its a good ride not keen on the seat though feels like i just got outta prison atm haha after riding it home from the bike shop, got it with gloves, helmet, front and rear lights, extended warrenty so gives me free services for 3 years for $785 i saved $440
Its got front and rear disc brakes and all pretty good setup
Because i got the last available one as it was end of model,

I currently have a Malvern Star which has been very good and reliable.
I was originally going to get another Apollo since the last one i had was so damn good (younger years) but couldnt find one locally.
