Default Any no-kill pet shelters in melbourne?

I was hoping I wouldnt have to resort to this... but my cat and my puppy really dont get along...

first few days at home the puppy wanted to go up to the cat and have a sniff, the cat wanted nothing to do with him so swatted and hissed... Now the puppy has to be on the lead or locked away in the back yard when the cat is around because they're both capable of hurting each other pretty bad

The cat is about 8 or so years old.. and its not very friendly at all - thats why they dont get along. Its only a matter of time before they get to each other, and dont want that to happen.

There is absolutly no way I could take the cat to a 'normal' pound because it would be put down straight away, and I couldnt do that... Just wondering if anyone knows of any no-kill pet shelters?

or anyone who wants to take in an older cat... not very friendly though

    google wasnt much help

How long have they been together? It can take months for a cat to be happy around other animals. Assuming you had the cat 8 years and just introduced the puppy?

Can't help you with the pound thing.

Wouldn't it be a better idea to give the puppy to someone else? and get another one once the cat has done his/her time? I mean surely you are attached to the cat after 8 years and the thing needs to be giving some respect for it's service to the family? you should at least see the cat's time out. Sometimes things just never get along.

I have this rabbit that was quite nice but very lonely so I got a nice little small baby black rabbit for it to have as a companion. Everything was great and they loved each other long time. Until one day I forgot to feed them...... The black rabbit had grown into a giant 5?-6kg meat rabbit :P lol (I didnt' expect that) and decided since I hadn't feed it the it was going to bite a hole in the bottom of the cage straight through the wire and dig itself out and eat some grass.

I woke up the next day to find both rabbits gone...... and white fur all over the front and back yards. I assumed a fox had got the original rabbit and dreaded looking for the remains, I had no clue where the black one was?. Then I looked out on the highway and there they both were sitting by the edge of the road watching the cars go passed?.

It took me ALONG time to catch the black one since shes feral :P and I got plenty of scratches on the stomach when I finally did grab her. Ever since then If I put them together the white one will have a go at the black one despite beign half the size:P. I have no idea what happened that day but clearly they had been beating the crap out of each other all night and have never forgot about what happened, it took all week for the white one to heal and yeah, ever since then they have lived with a seperation fence between them because as soon as I remove it, it's on fur, blood the lot

Why don't you just keep your cat inside where they should be so they aren't roaming the neighbourhood, getting into catfights, shitting in peoples gardens and killing native animals and keep the dog outside. If they don't contact each other problem solved, if the cat has to go outside build a cat enclosure, you can do this relatively cheap. I don't like your chances of rehoming the cat especially if it does act a bit feral not when they are so so many cute cuddly kittens up for adoption. I would also give it a bit more time, puppys don't stay puppys for forever, in no time your puppy will be fully grown and will be the one intimidating the cat

The pet shop at Chadstone had puppies up for adoption the other day. I'm not sure where they came from but you could try pet shops in your area and see if they can take them in (not sure if there are regulations on this though)

Stealthy: theyve been together for about a month and a half now, but every time they meet it gets worse, and with my grandparents feeding him in the middle of the day when im not home, if the cat were to be there, they would have no way of breaking them up

Greenfoam: nooo way im getting rid of my puppy, ive waited too long for a puppy and ive gone through wayyy to much stress (already) with him, but i do want the cat to live out its last coupla years

Julie: the cat isnt allowed inside because it jumps on everyone and everything and scratches the hell out of the couch, and its impossible to get out when you want it to... Also, the dog is an indoor one... he sleeps outside and is outside when no one is home, but then at night he spends his time inside.

oh, and he's only just a puppy, but already nearly double the cats size, and alot of the time now he's the one that starts to pick on the cat, the cat doesnt run though, just sits there and hisses.. thats why if he were ever off the lead in the yard and the cat was there they would have a go at each other... the cat would easily hurt the puppy, n the puppy could easily kill the cat

Philthy: thanks for the idea, its worth a shot i suppose!

So put the dog in a kennel?

Seriously annoys me when people buy pets without thinking things through, then just want to offload it when something doesnt work.

When i said it can take months, that means multiple months. The cat is used to the house behing hers.

Buying a few scratch pads and putting them around will have the cat no where near your couch, or you could just get the scratch pad corners for couches.

You need to leave them together to sort themselves out. Keep in mind the puppy just wants the play all the time, the fighting you 'think' is happening is just the cat telling the puppy to piss of and let it sleep. But, the puppy being a puppy think this is the cats way of playing. He'l only need to be clawed once to get the message.

Poor cat! Youve had the car for 8 years, and the puppy for a month. Now because they dont get along, the cat that youve had for so long and has grown apart of the family gets the boot? MEAN! lol

Ive had my cat for approx the same amount of years, and I dont care what the complications are I wouldnt just give it away. I just couldnt let myself do it. The poor thing would have to adapt to all new surroundings and people after living at the same place with the same people for 8 years.

Surely the cat would have some priority? Doesnt anyone else see it this way? Apart from foam?

agreeing with everyone here. getting rid of the cat is just stupid. they will learn to live with each other soon enough, and as minux said, didnt you think that something like this would happen before you bought the puppy? you already seemed to think the cat was a grumpy one, yet you got a puppy anyway

Try these guys: bluecross's member profile at PetRescue

They are one of our customers, any damaged bags of pet food (which we have tonnes of damages), we donate to them as they are a non government funded shelter and need the donations more. Lovely bunch of people too, they ACTUALLY care about the animals.

    HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA Gold....

As I'm not a Cat person and find them extremely annoying I would be taking it out to some bush land and leaving it.

Minux... we did think it through... we didnt plan on the cat being as much of a psycho as it has been. We did our research, and the only reason i want to get rid of the cat is so that it doesnt get hurt or killed. hence why im asking if there are any NO KILL pounds.. because i want to avoid that. We introduced them how all the books and all the experts said to do... but the cat still hisses, and now the dog wants to attack it (or so it seems, i dont want to let it get to that stage)

If it were up to me they would be best friends and get along just fine.. didnt turn out that way. And just so you know.. i didnt go to the petshop and get a dog on impulse because i thought it was cute.. i spent a long time going through every breed trying to determine which one was best for us. Then, spent even more time reading everything i could get my hands on about the breed. Then calling a few dog schools to see what they had to say and to get him booked in to classes before i even got him home. So I DID think about what might have happend, but as hard as i tried, I couldnt predict the future with 100% accuracy. sorry.

Stealthy: the cat isnt interested in those scratch pads, seems to know what its supposed to do, and then doesnt do it.. and at first the puppy did just want to play, but now he growls at the cat, and not a friendly growl either while the cat arches its back and hisses like crazy. Also, just dont want the dog to 'learn' that cats = pain (from getting scratched in the face) and therefore hate cats and go chasing the neighbours cats when walking

    Troy711: its a rhodesian ridgeback

Cobez: Thankyou, will look into it

philthy: the petshop at chadstone you say... hmmm.. maybe have to check it out...

I'll give it a little while longer, seeing as everyone thinks its sooooooooo horrible... but if they just get worse then the cat has to go. dog isnt going anywhere, not an option.

    Lol, your more then welcome!

In regards to the cat being a bit nasty... its a pretty simple question and im sure you have been asked a million times but have you made sure to not change the way the cat lives like the time it spends with you, where it sleeps and eats??
Cuz i just got a puppy (from the keysie shelter actually) and a already have 2 cats (again from the shelter ima fan can you tell?) And for the first week they were pretty nasty to the dog but we just had to make sure we didnt change the way the cats were being treated.
Altho some cats can be very jealous spesh as they get older.

nahh the cat actually has more space now (cleared all the junk out of the yard before the pup came), and gets more attention and treats when the dog is around (to try and get it to associate the dog with good things), and its not as if the cat doesnt like the dog being there, its just that if one gets too close to the other they both go a bit nuts. And both of them like to instigate so its not just one or the other. I also tried letting the cat inside with the dog, but that just gave the cat more places to hide but where he could still swat the dog (like behind the couch)

The poor puppy has to be kept in his kennel run when no one is home (still plenty of space, but he doesnt get to go to his favorite part of the yard).

And actually, its the first time i've been asked that question but i was aware of not changing the cats 'teritory' as much as possible so we have made an effort

Well it seems like your pretty set on your decision, im sure you have though it through.

If its any peace of mind, keysborough animal shelter are pretty strict with who they sell the animals back out too, and they have little card things thar tell people about the animal and alot of them often say "does not mix well with dogs" so its not an un common thing.

hmmm.. well like i said, i'll give them a little more time... because my preferance would be that they get along and keep each other company! but its in their hands.... or paws

but if it does come to the point where i need to get rid of the cat, at least i know now of a couple places

Thats normal cat behaviour. It took 2 months for my parents kitten to go near the dog. Likewise it took a few months for my kitten to go near the 1yo cat. The hissing and growling (cat) is perfectly normal til they get used to eachother. For the first week the older cat sat in the laundry and didn't move, even tho the kitten was only in a room most of the time.

My parents cat still sometimes claws the furniture, so they just have everything covered. Not that hard really. If anything it seems you don't want to keep the cat anymore, cause the new toy is there to play with haha.
