Up till March this year I was away interstate often and flying back for the weekends. Then I changed jobs and it's stopped thank god as you get over it pretty quick. You lose so much time just sitting in the bloody airport lounges waiting for departures.

I have been put on a fly in fly out roster at the moment by my employer.

I'm usually city based in an office in this job, but now I have found myself in the Pilbara for 12 hour days 14/7 roster supervising drill rigs and geotech logging the core that comes out of the ground. Been rostered on from the start of July to the end of October. Another 2 swings to go.

Bad bit - its getting warm up there, 12 hour days, flies, noise, dust, travel times (9 hours total from Brisbane to Pilbara), no sex for 2 weeks , living in a donga.

Good bit - makes the time go quickly, I get to be the boss, Qantas Club, frequent flyer points, business class, and today is my first day of seven off

I'm used to it, been doing the mining thing and travelling around for 8 years, but I know some guys who get driven mad by it and just quit.

I work away fairly often, it sucks! I'm seriously contemplating changing jobs, becoming a paramedic, because I hate my current job, would be an interesting and challenging job and I would be home every night, or day if nightshift.

i've been working a 4 on 4 off roster 1000kays away from home driving a dumptruck in the mines for the last year and a half. the cost of plane tickets out of a mining town is that high im better off driving my 5L vs home once every few weeks. its not much fun being stuck on your own in the middle of nowhere but i have to do it to get the coin if me and my young fella want to play with expensive toys
