Default ACA - Speed Humps Wrecking Your Car...

its screening tonight in Melbourne, I dont normally watch those shows but I think its about time it was said about speedhumps, not that anything will happen as a result.

I've often wanted to send councils the bill for wheel alignments, wheel balancing, and general suspension wear and tear accelerated by speed humps.

If I wanted to drive over obstacles, I'd buy a 4wd and go off road. If anyone else watches it, post your thoughts.

Yeah I watched it. Had some good points...Mechanics all around Melbourne said that speed humps cause a 50% decrease in the life of your suspension and severely impact the economy of the car and increase the Co2 emissions of the car...

I didn't watch it but I used to have a good webpage bookmarked about how bad speedbumps are for your car, the roads, the atmosphere, noise pollution, and probably how they give your babies cancer. Of course I can't find it now that I want to

you know the exaggeration these shows put on things?
50% is probably the largest number they could come up with, which is people speeding over speedhumps.

(oh, and im not saying that speedhumps are good, nor bad)

Speed bumps are a annoying fact of driving. If it wasn't for idiots who can't follow road rules, we wouldn't need them.

But once again everyone has to suffer because of a minority.

But yeah they had some good points, because of the stop go driving needed to negotiate them, you are wearing your suspension, your brakes, your engine and stressing the chassis each time to approach and go over one.

They're a pain in the arse, but unfortunately are needed...

Of course ACA and TT exaggerate things. It's the media, everything they say is blown out of proportion or is the concoction of some bullshit artist.

However, statistics might be exaggerated or they might not, the evidence is there for us all to see, whether their statistics are right or not. Speed bumps are a suspension killer.

I wonder how much emisions would decress if all speedbumps where removed?

I know I would use less fuel.

no they dont, go down any road and feel the bumps in it and ripples in the road and tell me that traveling over them at speed will only account for 50% of the wear on your suspension and the other 50% is from hitting speed humps at a slow speed in whats negligibly 0.0000000000001% of the distance your car travels.

as for stress when avoiding them or negotiating them the amount of speed humps we hit as opposed to the amount of traffic lights we start and stop at. most lights have the ashphelt rippled in the breaking area, speed humps dont usually so it shows most of the stress is done at lights and intersections.

another crap example of ACAs journalism ability aimed at the unable minded motoring population. the rest of us should just sit back and lol at the rubbish that people actually believe

    They actually promote stupid behaviour...

When I was young and stupid... me any my mates decided to try and jump my dads company ford courier ute over one...

I can vouch that they wreck suspension... the car was written off on landing and some sensitive gas equipment in the back was destroyed...

If only the speed bump wasn't there... none of this would have happened...

    See...

Are you ****ing for real? Jesus... just when you thought there was nothing left at the bottom of the barrel to scrape!

Protip: If you don't want to wear your suspension/tyres/brakes etc so quickly DRIVE SLOWLY OVER THE BUMPS - that's why they are bloody there in the first place!

Wasting fuel? Yeah sure, and I guess we should get rid of traffic lights too? and hills? what about we just demolish everything in a straight line between us and our destination so we never have to stop at all?

    ****ing morons.

Honestly, what a load of rubbish....ACA must be getting low on stories. I'm a mechanic, and where i live there are NO speed humps at all. Guess what, we still get worn out shitbox cars come in. People don't maintain there cars, it's as simple as that....

I didn't watch it but in these parts the council places speed humps in backstreets to manipulate the driver into using the main road.. wonder how much cash they DON'T have to spend on maintenance on these backstreets? fair enough some humps are useful nears schools etc but these useless backstreet humps are better suited up a councillors ass-pipe. amen.

speed humps on private roads are the worst. unfortunately the worst ones i find are at the shopping centre where i work.
they're not going to change anything on my behalf because i'm not a customer but i can hear them scrape my legal height undercarriage whenever i go over them, that kinda throws a spanner in the whole "zomg if you don't speed you won't get damage/fines/cancer" thing

the new speed humps they're putting out are the square ones, not the full length ones. They are useless in a standard car, if u line them up ur wheels just clip em and u dont have to slow down at all. They are clever thou, they make em about 10-15cm's high so ur legally lowered cars cant get over them without scraping, so supposedly stopping the 'hoons' from taking the back streets. i say if they are going to put speedhumps in, put the full width ones, at least then all streets are accessable to all cars.

and yes most cars i see hitting them at 40+kms, will **** ur suspension.. seriously where is the common sense?

i love how when watsys name had his ve calais there, and they came back with that mysterious noise in the front suspension, how they muttered what they did but said today its 490 odd dollars,

knock in the front end would most likely be the engine mount on those...

    here starts the massive debate...

The damage ACA claims that speed bumps do to your suspension is obviously exaggerated but it is not as trivial as some of you make it out to be...

speed humps are bitch, especially in a lowered car with hard suspension...

I have lowered cars, can't say speed humps have ever damaged my suspension....If they damage your suspension your obviously going too fast over them. Have any of you ever seen the testing cars go through at the Lang Lang proving ground? Trust me, when you see what they do to cars out there, speed humps are trivial!
