    Default Whitewall tyres can now be defectable......

    A Vic member informed a few of us last week that Police are now cracking down on people with white walled tyres if they didn't come out from factory with white walling on them, due to the fact whoever does the whitewalling, has to grind the tyre details off from around the tyre before they lay the white walling down.

    Anyone else have any further info on this? Not that it worry's me, i think whitewalls look retarded on any Commodore, IMO, they suit OLD cars.

    This is for Vic mind you, no idea on other states in Australia.

    Just found this:

    Federal Register of Legislative Instruments F2007C00030 Australian Design Rule 23/00 Passenger Car Tyres

    23.2.3. Labelling Requirements.
    Each tyre shall be conspicuously labelled on both ‘Sidewalls’ in the case
    of symmetrical tyres and at least on the outer ‘Sidewalls’ in the case of
    ‘Asymmetrical Tyres' with each of the following permanently moulded in
    letters and figures at least 3.8 mm high and depth at least 0.25 mm if
    below the background surface or 0.4 mm if above the background

    23.2.3.1. tyre size designation, which includes the 'Speed Category' symbol as
    determined from Table 4 either within the size designation or adjacent to
    the size designation as part of the 'Service Description', and 'Tyre
    Carcass Construction Symbol’ for 'Radial Ply Tyres' or 'Bias-belted
    Tyres' and optionally, in the case of 'Diagonal Ply’;;

    23.2.3.2. the 'Maximum Load Rating' for the tyre expressed in kilograms followed
    by the word "kilograms" or the abbreviation 'kg' or the ‘Maximum Load
    Rating' for the tyre expressed in pounds followed by the word “pounds"
    or the abbreviation “lbs” or the 'Load Index' symbol (from Table 2)
    adjacent to the size designation as part of the 'Service Description'. Tyres
    shall be labelled unambiguously in respect to ‘Maximum Load Rating’ or
    ‘Load Index';

    23.2.3.3. identification of manufacturer by:

    23.2.3.3.1. Name; or

    23.2.3.3.2. Brand Name and an 'Approved’ code mark;

    23.2.3.4. the word "TUBELESS" if applicable;

    23.2.3.5. the word "RADIAL" if applicable;

    23.2.3.6. the words 'BIAS-BELTED' if applicable;

    23.2.3.7. a date code consisting of 3 digit, the first 2 nominating the week of the
    year and the third digit the year of manufacture on at least one ‘Sidewall’
    of the tyre; and

    23.2.3.8. in the case of 'Asymmetrical Tyres’, a clear indication which side of the
    tyre is to face outwards when fitted to the vehicle.

    And i hear all Vic coppers got a memo last week telling them to be on the lookout for people with whitewalled tyres, and has been posted on the SC forum, a few people have been done down in Mornington for it in the past few weeks too.

    Makes sense to me, they are also cracking down on people buying tyres bought outside of Australia that are not approved for Australian road use.

    About time really.

    I agree, i never even really thought about it to be honest, but it DOES make sense to me, grinding down the load rating etc info on a tyre CAN compromise the tyres structural safety, even if it doesn't, it breaches the ADR law, so safe or not, it's legally defectable.

    They look shit on anything bar really old Chev's, Holdens, Fords etc anyway.

    i guess the people who do whitewalls should really warn their customers that it's defectable now. it may a case of owners onus for obvious modifications like lowering etc, but it would never even cross my mind that whitewalls would be defectable (hell i didn't even know they grinded back the lettering!). not that i'd get them anyway though.

    It's always been defectable, I looked into it 4years ago.

    They actually do say that its for "show use", As long as they say that customers don't have a leg to stand on.

    Cheers

    Also explain why there seems to be a lot of whitewall businesses for sale. There must be a lot of hype out about it now.

    Hahaha, you're so old skool Hozy lol.

    The point was that the Police are cracking down on it now. It's been illegal since 2006 officially as far as i am aware.

    its like anything thats non ADR compliant though, like certain Altezza rear lights. Its still legal to sell and your actually better off not giving advice to a customer because that too can come back and bight you. Ethically yes you should mention it, but legally your not bound to, so why do it.

    I agree if their skimming the sidewall and weakening it, Ive looked at a couple that have done and the writing is still there, maybe this was done differently.

    I'll stick with my "white walls"

    As for the rule though, I'm sure they'll keep doing it just without the grinding back of the tyre surface. Won't produce as neat a job up close, but from a distance will look the same.

    Yeah that's true^^^ But alot of people will (if they are smart) steer away from even doing that, just mainly because Police will see if and pull them over anyway for a closer look.

    Completely stock outside car FTW!! This is the reason, sleepers are awesome. But obviously P platers affected by the new laws are restricted to what mods they can do, so i can understand why they will still get white walls.
