Well I applied for an apprenticeship in the navy as an electrical technician (Fixing weapon systems, Radar systems etc.). I had the aptitude test yesterday and I got a list of job opportunities. Well I wasn't going to join because I am in a residential draftsman course full time next year, But after yesterday it has changed my mind a little. The navy would be wicked fun (traveling) and I would be earning a fair bit of money. The hard thing is leaving all my family and friends. Also, If anyone is in the Navy and knows a bit about recruitment could you please shoot me a PM.
Cheers.
If you have been considering have a read.

I was being sarcastic, kapooka is a walk in the park nowadays, needs to go back to old days of hardcore where you got beaten, slapped, kicked, spat on etc. That shit rebuilt heads. From meeting a few new lids when i was last at my old unit, I have to say kapooka/Singo training courses are a joke. Many old friends have left simply due to not being able to rely on new gen soldiers. Fairly scary thoughts right there.

Minux you are starting to sound like a cranky old man these days![]()
Walesy's in the navy I think...
When I'm in the navy I bet I will save more money than 75% of people my age with apprenticeships. They also have awesome benefits and I learn a trade and get out of this town. Also get to travel the world and experience alot of different cultures and stuff. Will be a great experience so why not just do it while I'm young?

One of those 'back in my day' people hey, but you are right it does seem to get worse. Recruiting standards have dropped, doesn't seem to matter if people aren't deployable either as long as on paper the numbers are there. As for money, yeah its good for trades as an apprentice but thats about it. No overtime here, you go out bush and work 24/7 and get only a few bucks extra a day.

What do you mean by anything?

dead set, if you join up because of that page, you are living a dream. it's not like that in the real navy, beleive me.
if your a family man, it's tough, it's dam tough. the divorce rate in the navy is a huge figure. when at sea, expect to spend so much time away it's not funny.

You do get paid heaps when you get sent overseas... pluss you get tax free alcohol![]()
Nah I have navy backgrounds and know alot about it. Yeah its hard being deployed, but its not like you are constantly at sea for years in a row.. It IS good pay IMO and especially if you are doing an apprenticeship, you get paid alot more than a regular apprenticeship.

Have you ever considered the merchant navy?
My old man was a 1st officer for 35 years, and had his master class 1 but never chose to work as the captain due to the extra responsibility and not much extra pay.
Even though, he was well on the other side of $100k per annum. The pay rates for the engineers were the same as well, and slightly less for seaman.
He was at sea max 3-4 months per year, doing the coal and iron ore route to Japan. When i was younger he used to do 6-12 month swings, but the benefit is the time that you spend at sea is the time you get off, so you are only ever really working half the year.
I looked into becoming a marine engineer, but in the end didn't know if I could put up with being at sea with other blokes for months on end.
