Default Ford Probe - Any common faults?

    Hi all,

I'm thinking of selling my VS and getting a Ford Probe.... (please keep the bagging of fords out of this thread), I'm not a ford fan, I am just downgrading my car to something smaller .. the Probe is a 2.5L.

I'm really just after a Coupe, but can't find much under $10K ... well a decent looking sporty kind of car anyway. I want the boot to be in the cabin as much as possible... like the supra mk4's... because I'll be running subs etc... soundsystem very important to me... currently have gas tank in boot and losing a lot sound from that..

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this car. Is there any known problems? the engine is a mazda engine ... same as those mx6's. Anything I need to look for before buying one?

You'll probably have to give it a bit longer than 90 minutes before expecting a response!

I have never even seen a Ford Probe in real life so I can't help you there...

Lol Sorry DavidPartay ... just thought, the 24 people who have looked on the thread... thought maybe 1 person would know someting

I've seen quite a few Probes, but then I've had an eye for them.. strange that you never notice it until you actually looking for it.

It's a mitsubishi V6. If it uses the same auto as the rest of them, run away! Nice torquey engine but the gearboxes are shocking. I had mine rebuilt 3 times!

Mitsubishi v6? I thought it was a Mazda engine. Did you own a Probe??
I've been told the car uses a lot of mazda 626 and mazda mx6 parts.... and those cars aren't rare.

you asked not to bag the ford (cockroach) and then complain no one is responding.
    cant have it both ways.

I know I'll get biased answers if I went on a Ford forum. But I thought that we would have a few decent people on Just Commodores that would give a non-biased answer. Even though I'll prob b getting a Ford.. I'll still be on Just Commodores.

In the future I want a R34 Skyline, I am a member of Skylines Australia forum ... but they are a bunch of losers. I think the crowd on Just Commodores is way better.

i understand that but most on here who have fords, will have mostly falcons and some focus, festivas.

Hmm I guess so. Maybe some mechanics have come across Probes before? I dunno... Thought I'd ask Just Commodores before I buy one.

the ford probe is exactly the same as the Mazda mx6. Same engine, gearbox and chassis. I think the parts would be a bitch to find but mazda's are usually quite reliable, as long as it's been treated well.

A mate had one a while ago, the purple one (not that you care about the color) they actually go quite hard and handle not too bad, only problem is finding parts for them. You hardly see them around anymore.

Hmm there seems to be a connection here XD parts may be hard to find. I thought there were lots of Mazda's around.

So... make sure you don't buy a thrashed lemon aye? Might try to get RAC or another mechanic to have a look at one before buying. Even though there is only so much you can see.

Problem would be trying to find a headlight or mirror or something, with engine parts there are options.

My mate had a Ford anal Probe for a few years.
He had the auto and that shit itself. It also started blowing smoke afterit passed 200k, but apart from that it was fine.
It was expensive to get exterior parts for it though...

I would love to have a Holden, I like my VS S2 Calais... but I get like 450kms per tank and tats granny driving all the way!!... Holden just doesnt have many small cars. I just need a car that gets me to uni and back and to martial arts and back, but I don't want something like a Matiz.

So my options are quite limited, especially with being at Uni... my budget is <$10k.

the young fella at work has a probe, nothing major wrong with it, he does have issues when something brakes, they are expensive, and getting replacement parts is getting harder for him. other than that, he has nothign to complain about. good km/tank

That's good to hear. Do you know of any common problems? leaky transmission? problems with gearbox? Anything I should look for before purchasing? Anything outside of the usual problems on a 1994 car?

I'm trying to think of what problems my vs has had.... in the 2 years I've owned it, when I brough it, had get my brake discs machined, radiator leak (fixed with radiator fixer), oil leak (magically fixed itself), battery died, fuel pump died (didn't use it enough, ran on gas 95% of time, also had whole in the sack of the pump). Thats about it. Had a recent leak in my boot, due to Altezza tail lights.

that's nothing, brakes = every car. battery = every car. 450kms from a tank is awesome as well, especially on gas. i doubt the probe will beat that anyway. my car does 300kms to a tank so i have to fill up twice a week which is quite annoying

I owned a Mazda 626. As I said, gearbox didn't like me much. I'm not sure if they're the same gearbox between the 626 and the Probe. Otherwise, I never had any major problems with the engine. Put a decent exhaust on it, the firing order of the engine gives it a really unique massive sound. Well worth it!
