SA Government push to ban P-Platers from high powered cars

From the Advertiser today:

P-PLATERS will be banned from driving popular high-powered cars in tough road laws the State Government will try to push through the Parliament before Christmas.

Provisional drivers aged under 25 will be banned from driving vehicles with eight-cylinder engines or more, turbocharged or supercharged engines and cars with modifications aimed at increasing performance.

They also will be prohibited from driving specific high-performance vehicles, details of which will be outlined under regulations once the legislation is passed.

Road Safety Minister Michael O'Brien said a list of vehicles that would be restricted in South Australia was still being worked on but it would be based on those vehicles restricted in Queensland.

P-platers in Queensland are banned from driving V8s, including the Holden Commodore SS and Ford Falcon XR8, non-diesel-powered turbo and supercharged cars such as the Subaru Impreza WRX Turbo, Nissan Skyline R34 and Holden Monaro V6.

dont know why ? teach the kids how to drive. through driving school's like the rest of the world.... and not as it is now, learning to drive from some one who them selfs cant drive..... it's like making a photocopy from a photocopy from a photocopy.....at the end the photocopy is so bad you see what it is..

Whats the quickest way to get a teen into a highpowered car? Make it illegal. Of course they'll want it more. Just like drinking, once you turn 18 its just not as fun.

If you were in a position where you had a car under finance and a job to get to where you couldn't use public transport, then what? You can't just wake up one morning and not be able to get to work because of a new law.

Well, most laws are enforced to 'new' p platers, i don't see how that can work with this, considering its people already owning a car. Or is it anyone who doesn't already own a V8 can't, but the ones who do can keep it.

Either way, no government will force me to sell my car (even tho i'm only a month away from 25). I'm wondering when you voters will vote in a government who can actually fix a problem, rather the create new ones.

If it's anything like the restrictions in other states there will be exemptions for people who's only car is a V8/turbo etc.

So what happens after they learn in a Daihatsu Charade on their Ps, then buy themselves that SS they've wanted for so long as soon as they get their full license, and drive it through the nearest fence by accident because they've forgotten you don't need to plant your foot just to get moving?

It's a stupid law. People should be learning in big, moderately powerful cars so that they can handle them if they for some reason have to be able to drive them (in an emergency or whatever). When I have driven all the Commodores and other higher powered vehicles, the throttle rarely goes past the halfway point. In my work car, which is a Getz, I'm flooring it all the time because you have to.

Imagine if I jumped into a V8 and started doing that without knowing better... It'd probably be a really short trip.

I'm yet to see any research that g forces in an SS commodore have killed a person. Hitting a stationary object will however.

I'm not a moron, i'm well aware of how they have worked it out. I said its a shit law.

Its only going to cause more problems. Just another law to break, and more people to risk running from the cops from driving a car they were allowed to drive on 24th of December, but not on 25th December.....
