hey guys
I was thinking about getting an apprenticeship as a mechanic, but after reading some threads on it and hearing about it and the money you get im not so sure. I'm 18 in Nsw,but ive made a few mistakes with a loan + credit and i can't afford to live off around $7h/r haha.
I recently moved states and i don't even have a job right now..pretty silly mistake not finding work here before moving haha..had to move with family though.
Can anyone suggest a decent job/apprenticeship were i can earn roughly about $400 a week or something around that mark?
Ive been applying everywhere hehe.
Im not sure, many apprenticeships are very low paying at first, maybe you could try and hang in on an apprenticeship for a while till it gets better?
You could always work some labor that pays well, just for a little while so you can pay off your debt and find an apprenticeship later on when your debts are lower.
I only say do labor because from my experience, Last year, when I was 17 saving for my car, I worked packing/unpacking scaffolding orders in a warehouse in the holidays and I was earning something like 800 a week from working 8 hours a day plus a little bit of overtime. It was very good pay for my age and I was saving money big time.
i doubt you will find an apprenticeship that pays $400 a week on your first year unless you go to the mines or somthing.
sparkys get that wage normally. why dont you just do labourer work till you work off your loan then get an apprenticeship.
Manual labor as in like Brick laying and things like that? $800 would be amazing! haha
My debts are roughly $1500 , including credit card, music instrument loan + money owing to family members so its not too bad i guess..but it still annoys me lol.
lol so true axemurderer
I'd be looking at what a somebody fully qualified earns in whatever particular trade you are interested in and then decide from there. If it pays what you want/need then do whatever it takes to survive thru the apprenticeship till then. Basing your whole career on what the first year or two earn is just daft.
Reaper
$1500 is nothing
Mate get your apprenticeship pays shit.... work a few hours nightfill at woolies something to fill in and a little extra cash
Yeah you guys are right ,probably should go for an apprenticeship and then get a 2nd night job
so would a apprentice sparky earn more than a apprentice mechanic or does it really depend on the place?
southy-wow $480 sounds really good for the first year! And whats a mechanical fitter? Im guessing it's not the base level of mechanical apprenticeships right?
And ill appreciate all your help and suggestions so far everyone![]()
Depending on where you are based a mechanical fitter basically pulls stuff apart and puts it back together, if needed making parts for the job.
Depending on what you want to get into Deisel fitter/mechanic, or Plant mechaincs are on really good pay for first years aswell.
To me it sounds like you really don't know what you want. Before you go looking for an apprenticeship you need to decide on what it is that you want to do with the rest of your life. If you're lucky enough to find an apprenticeship as a sparky, are you sure you're going to like it? Sounds like your only motive to wanting to do it is because you might get an extra $50 a week in the first year compared to a mechanic. Mechanic and sparkies are very different jobs. Just take money out of the picture and think about what you'd rather be doing, then go for that. The money might be crap at first, but if you really love what you do you will excell at it and the money will start flowing later on in life. Think about your future, not just a $1500 debt... cos honestly that's just pennies.
To be honest, iam a little unsure on what i want. I really don't have any interest in electricity. But iam passionate about cars.
Your exactly right though and it couldn't have been said any better. So at this stage,a mechanic apprenticeship is probably the best way to go for me. With a 2nd casual job to get the debt out of the way.
Are they hard to get though? ive been doing a bit of research but it seems like it would be hard to get an apprenticeship at holden. But anywhere decent will do
What you just said though really opened up my mind though. Thank you

if you're passionate about cars, becoming a mechanic will completely ruin that. you'll get so sick of cars that you won't want to go near them after work. that's just the impression i get from knowing a few mechanics anyway. sparkies can get paid really well after apprenticeships as well...
im a 1st year chef. on a 38 hour week i bring in $390-410 a week depending on what days i work. Last week i did 43 hours and brought in $460. If you wanna be in a chef you want to work in a pub or club as its a better award then a normal resturarant. I got mates at tafe who work in fine dining resturants and do 45 hours a week and earn no more then $320 a week lol. and its also harder work in fine dining...
I got a mate who is a 1st year sheet matel worker and does 60 hours a week and earns around $500...
I was doing machanical engineering (fitting and machining) at tafe for 12 months and couldnt get a job, the closest i came was 2nd out of 113 applicantsi got desperete so i became a chef as its a heaps easy trade to get into
Also with mechanical engineering it depends were you work some places pay shit and others pay good. In my fitting machining class i had a mate who was on $270 and another was on $380 per week.
But i dont think anywhere you work as a normal mechanic you will be paid over $250 a week 1st year.
It worked out good for me. I sleep in every single day, i get most weekend nights off, and im out of the kitchen at 10:30pm at the latest.

You forgot to mention most Chefs work from 9:30am till 9:30pm with a long break inthe middle. Pretty much rules you out from doing anthing else on the 5-6 days a week you work. Good pay yes (since most people don't do it for long and there's a constant shortage) but you need to be hard as rock in the brain to handle doing it long term

if you cant afford to live of $7 a hour, i sugest you go and get a few years manual labouring work, then before your 21, pay everything off and get your apprenticeship.
money as a aprentice is crap, realy realy crap, if you want good money join up with a eba company. they are hard to come by and only take the best.

I started my apprenticeship as an auto electrician when i was 20 after doing a pre-app course at tafe, for the first year i was earning $266 a week but since i turned 21 at the end of august this year im now getting $441. I wanted to do the whole mechanic thing when i was still at school but i did work experience at holden which pretty much turned me off lol
$1,500 dollar debt pfft...thats nothing try having a $20,000grand debt mate then complain about being in debt!
