    Default SAPOL'S new technology

ive heard from a few people that sapol are now using hi tech gizmo's that can tell if your car is unregistered, defected etc. and if you are unlicensed. its mounted on the back of the roof facing cars behind it so be careful and register your car!

oh btw they dont need to pull you over anymore they just mail the fine to you

we've got that same system up here, and ours actually checks the license status of the owner aswell. my understanding is if your license is suspended and you let the missus drive, you get fined for driving while disqualified. all because this new system allows cops to keep sitting on their donut munching defect issuing stupid asses

the only new tech i've heard of is auto no. plate recognition, a camera that processes number plates. this is no different to cops keying it into their terminals, except that it can process every car that goes past.

I've seen this tech in use on those pom cop shows. I would be very concerned, but i would be more inclined to be worried about facial recognition technology in combination with CCTV. They say as long as you don't do anything wrong you have nothing to worry about. BS, what about those people that are falsely accused. Or corrupt coppers fiddling with your files?

They had all that back when I was in England. It works well and deffinatley helps keep uninsured, no rego'd and unlicensed drivers off the road. The only time it caused me grief was when my insurance didn't register my new insurance policy on the police database. Luckily it was in office hours and I could ring my insurance and got them to talk to the copper who'd pulled me over.

As far as I am aware ACT police will have the cameras fitted to ALL units within 12 months. During the first month they caught 320 people (181 unregistered drivers, 67 unlicensed drivers, 59 suspended drivers and 13 disqualified drivers).. and that's only a handful of cameras. The sooner this technology is wide spread the better.

“Nearly 22% of all collisions resulting in injury and 38% of all fatal collisions in the ACT involve an unregistered car or a driver who is not authorised to drive, so without doubt, getting these people off the roads is saving lives,” Supt Colbran said

i have no problem with this aslong as they are actually pulling over and confirming who is driving in the case of a disqualified / suspended driver , back when i was last disqualified i still had rego on the car so i would get people too drive me around in it.
driving disqual is pretty much instant jail these days so thats a big worry if they are not confirming who is driving the car.
and on the plus side if you think about it you might actually get pulled over less for random checkups if everything is in order.

As stated this is not new, it has been around for a few years, but only starting to get rolled out on mass versions etc.

The people that will winge about this are the people that drive unregistered, cancelled/suspended/expired licences, stolen cars/plates, warnigns on vehicles for driving by suspended/disqualified/intoxicated drivers.

All these alerts will notify police immediately of any adverse "red flags" on your vehicle, which are current up to the date in question, then it is generally up to police to pull you over and check you out.

They cant send you a ticket/charge for your car driving down the road (if your wife has a suspended licence) and your driving and you have a current licence. Police must prove who was driving the vehicle at the time.

No need for law abiding citizens to fear, but as in anything, a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing, and people will blow it out of control to make themselves sound good.

If SA has it, every other state had it years ago

^ True stealthy there have been cars in VIC trialing this several years ago (on the outside of cars) and I'd say it's been inbuilt into all the VIC highway cars ever since
