Default Car insurance for modified cars

    Hey guys,

I would like to hear some suggestions on car insurance, i've tried to go through some of the big names GIO NRMA ect..
The cheapest i currently could find is $2800 premium with $750 excess (which due to funds i had to lower the premium and highten the excess to $1000 premium and $3000 excess)
But most will just turn me down on account the "car is modified"
I'm 20 years old and have a modified commy, I'm happy not to insure the modifications, but most say "you must disclose any modifications".

    Any ideas?

Try justcars insurance. They do modified vehicles & there pretty cheap. Now when an insurance company tells you to disclose any modifications they mean it, otherwise in the event of an accident they wont insure you if they don't know about any mods you've done to your car.

Yeah Justcar worked out to be the second cheapest, at $1300 premium and $1700 excess.

Still seems a touch steep for insurance doesn't it? or is this just the price.

I'm possitive my dad said a while ago his full comp insurance is $600 with $500 excess. Now obviously it would be cheaper because he's alot older and more experienced driver, but the difference of about $2000... common...

Yeah im afraid to say JustCars is your only choice really. Make sure you disclose EVERYTHING youve done to your car to them because they are known to be pretty slimey when it comes time to payout.

Hahaha are you serious? They would probably lose the car when they take it for repairs!

Agh AAMI and Justcar seem to be my only options.. although they're basically the same company.

I'm with RACV at the moment and seem ok with my current mods. Never had any problems with them so far but i'm going from full comprehensive to 3rd party in the coming renewal. I will most likely switch to justcar.

Bit expensive though but if anyone in ur family is a member i'm fairly sure i get discounts

Yeah thats with AAMI. I dont think JustCars does it.

Like i said above if you go with JustCar makes sure you are extra careful to list everything and cover your arse because they are notorious for finding a way out of coughing up the dough.

You may have but there are countless other unhappy customers of Just Cars. With my SS there was no other choice, it was JustCars or no insurance. Im not holding my breathe that JustCars is any better than no insurance in the event of an accident.

Having done this exercise for my son last year, I believe you will find Just Cars are about the only company that will insure a modified car for young drivers. Others either charge incredible amounts or out right refuse to take on the policy when you ring them.

My current insurance with AAMI, but they would only insure the car up to 20mm lowered.

My car is roughly... 100mm lowered, so i had to lie about it, which by the sounds of things i might have well not insured my car.

so i really want to get away from them... are you serious about australia post insuring cars?

Have you rang Aust Post or just done an online quote? I did a few online quotes for my son too, then when I actually rang to organise the policy, everything changed. Usually you find the small print on the quote someone online that says the quote is still subject to meeting certain criteria etc. Most said they wouldn't insure him due to age / experienced / modified car.

Don't know who else saw it, but Top Gear did a segment a few weeks ago on buying a car in the UK as a teenager and getting insured and they also found most policies were worth more than the car.

just did 2 quotes with aus post and they were happy to insure the stato but not the ss lol.

i guess the list of mods/accesories was a bit much for them and i didnt even get to the engine and brake mods lmao

quick edit: they were only a few bucks cheaper than aami so not really worth the hassle changing unless i read their conditions regarding choice of own repairer and what not and if they were better id change

Yeah they wouldnt touch my SS.

...and as Sash said, make sure you ring them because a few companies were more than happy to insure me online but refused when I called them to confirm the policy.

Shannon's aren't going to insure a 20 year old driving a 6 banger executive with a fart pipe and wheels.

Unfortunately expensive insurance is part of being a young driver.

I had to settle with Just Car at 1200 a year. problem is even when i adjust my age to be 25 i save a whole 15 bucks next year, and most other companies still dont wanna know you if you got an 8 or modded
