So what exactly are they doing. I think you should double check with the mechanic on why it costs so much.

Find an independent mechanic that does log book services.

I made the mistake of going to Suzuki for my 06 Grand Vitara 30,000km service and was stung $700 for the privilege.

When I went through the invoice, most of the money was the $100+ hr labor cost, and I bet they only worked on it for 2 hours and got a apprentice to work on it.

My mum got stung around $900 for the last service on her AU, it's never been back to Ford since: ) My wife takes her Fiesta there to, so far so good but it's only had oil changes and she supplies the oil. If you've made it to 80,000ks I think that's close enough to warrenty out to start doing them yourself?

As it has been said, get a full list of work done. It could be like the 100,000km service on a Pajero (well NM anyway) which is over $1000. Involves changing timing belt/water pump/removing top section of inlet manifold to change plugs... rather labour intensive service.

If it involves a timing belt, that's fine. If not, forget it. That price is awful high for a standard service if they havn't even gotten around to the mid-day call to inform you that the brakes need changing and your headlight fluid is low.

they said diff oils.. and yeah spark plugs.. so that means taking inlet manifold down..

A major service at a dealer would easily be around that amount. If it's a minor service you're getting done over.

Check the log book, they usually tell you what each service involves. Post up what the 80k service is for your car.

It could need all oils, coolant, brake fluid and if it has a timing belt that could need replacing.
Also if it has adjustable tappets they could need adjusting.
All of that could cost up to $900
