hey

bumpbump..
I'm a tourist here and I was gonna join. First 6 months is all seminars and training. You only get to go to HQ once a week apparently.
Go the Fireys man, head over to either Winmalee, Valley Heights or Faulconbridge Rural Fire Brigades and have a chat the either the Captain or one of the Deputies on a Wednesday night (Tues for Winmalee) from about 1900 onwards.
Before I moved to Newcastle, I lived in Katoomba for 19 (my whole life haha) years and was active in the RFS from 2005-2008. Unlike the SES in Victoria, the NSW and especially the Blue Mountains SES don't do a great deal of exciting work unless they're what's called a primary rescue unit, which the SES in the mountains are not. That's covered by Police Rescue and the NSW Fire Brigades.
From my experiences the SES's bread and butter is major disaster recovery akin to the Hunter and Central Coast storms in 2006 and Blacktown in 07. Work consists of patching up peoples roofs and the like. By all means it can be quite a rewarding thing to do and don't discourage your enthusiasm to get involved at all, but chicks dig the fireys!
im always busy when the training nights for RFS are on so i cant go in RFS, and also everyone i know in in RFS so i want to try some thing different
